I ran into this when I was hanging in Luzern yesterday. Anyone knows what this activity is and what is in their hand (looks like a bell)?

What’s this activity in Luzern? from Switzerland

  1. Walking around with big bells in a rhythmic fashion is called “Trycheln” and is an old Swiss tradition used at various events. In my home region it’s meant to drive away evil spirits.Unfortunately, this tradition has been hijacked by a bunch of dork ass losers that follow conspiracy theories, which is most likely the case here. They call themselves “Freiheitstrychler” and it’s best to just ignore them until they go away.

Edit: As u/Swigor pointed out this case is a normal traditional group, active around the celebration of St. Nick

  2. As far as I know, in lucerne the Trychler are announcing that st. Nikolaus is arriving for this years christmas. Often you have him and the schmutzlis and the other servants right behind the trychler

  3. Sad to know this tradition is being co-opted by some unsavory folks bc it has a really cool ethereal drone sound to it

  4. It‘s an Idiot Parade. Every village has the obligation to send the village idiot to the nearest parade every weekend.

  5. They have small balls, also called Glocken in german. To attract females and to compensate for their small Glocken, they hold big Glocken in front of them and swing them synchronic.

  6. Central Switzerland Tradition. Usually together with Samiklaus, Schmutzlis, Ivele (lantern carriers) and geissleklepfe (bull whips) and of course Trichele (bells) prosession through old towns with a lot of noise and alcohol.
