  2. >Indeed, the concept of a ‘Greek’ or ‘Hellenic’ identity, for the most part, had not existed for centuries, and for early-modern Greek-speakers, the Heroes of Homer were mystical giants from a distant pagan past, not their direct ancestors.

Many sources exist pointing to the opposite, yet they choose the work of the ideologicaly biased Nikolaos Politis, who collected folk tales and grandmother stories to their children, or the ramblings of the ahistorical Adamantios Korais, that should not constitute evidence for national identity.

    > Overall, the Klephts, Armatoloi and Maniots were little more than local bandidos.

This could not be further from the truth concerning the Maniots, they had their own state in its own right.

    >The Etaireia was a secret society that sought to cultivate a new patriotic ethnogenesis for the modern Greek people by promoting Hellenism: reviving their long-dormant ties to the ancient Spartans and Athenians, while doing away with the ‘Roman’ label which had long become associated with Ottoman servitude.

Then why exactly did Theodoros Kolokotronis constantly say in his Memoirs that the Greeks were trying to restore the “Rhomeiko”, in other words being the Roman State? This statement is an exaggeration of the sentiments of a minority of the Greek intelligentsia that does not reflect their entirety, nor the identity of the common people of Greece.
