  1. Girl I work with was telling me a few months back that her sister went over to Turkey for a gastrectomy but they removed something like 80% – 90% of her stomach which was way move than they should have. The girl is only in her early 20’s and is now left like that for life. I really don’t see why people can do things like that to themselves. I suppose it’s a quicker option for a lot of people.

  2. Perhaps if the HSE was actually funded to take proper care of people with obesity, they wouldn’t be taking drastic steps like this. Obesity is a disease involving a persons hormones, the nervous system between their brain and their gut and mental health. Bariatric surgery can work for some people but it’s almost impossible to get here. Similarly there are medications that can help people resolve their obesity and lower the overall burden on the healthcare system, but they aren’t provided or even covered by HSE.

It’s far more convenient to trot out the old line of – “just eat less”. This only works for a tiny percentage of people with obesity and labels the rest as failures.

  3. I know three people that have gone abroad for gastric sleeve surgery (mainly Latvia and Czech Republic) I’m honestly shocked at how cheap the packages are and they must cut corners to do a major surgery, flights hotel etc for €2 -€3k. Luckily it’s worked out for the people I know, but it seems risky.

  4. As they say, “You get what you pay for”.

Think carefully if you are really saving money long term.

Applies especially to those going to dental clinics for big procedures with zero research.

  5. Girl from my hometown went to turkey with a group of 5 others during the summer who all had it done. Unfortunately she had an undetected hernia and is now down to 6 stone and on supplements to try keep herself healthy. She’ll never have a normal life now and had to give up work. She only had 2 stone to lose too. So sad that this is what is considered an easy out.

  6. I am really sorry for anyone who has had bad experiences. Unfortunately there are people/institutions in Turkey that can play with human life without giving a second thought. Even though this is some reality, I would still choose Turkish health care over Irish. If you do your research and select well Turkey can’t be beaten on quality, on quantity or on price over here. The mentioned institutions and people are not the norm, but the exceptions.
