wasn’t it Labour criminalised mushrooms 10 or 15 years ago or whenever that was

Where are the rest of the TDs?
This is just more virtue signalling.
I’m guessing the citizens assembly will recommend legalising it next year and that it will be left out of the misuse of drugs act the following year.
These politicians know this to be the case and know that nothing will be done until the citizens assembly makes it’s recommendations
The fact that it is 2022 and my use of psilocybin/ THC make me technically a criminal, is just baffling. Getting caught with that stuff could endanger my job, ability to pay mortgage and therefore my home. its ridiculous. at the same time I can destroy my health and liver with alcohol while society gives me a cheery wink
Frank knows all about drink that’s for sure. He used to run a local pub and would be on the session daily.
There really is no reason to criminalize drugs. “But crime” exactly, you’re creating crime and a black market by having continue it be illegal.
In the last few years with the US legalising cannabis for personal use or medical use the cartels have been smuggling less and less cannabis into the US…it used to be the biggest profit for them cause its so cheap but now its not even worth it to them.
But here’s the fuck up.
The US medical industry started pushing more and more doctors to prescribe opiods…so now the cartels are smuggling fentanyl…putting them into tablet form and even into blister packs. Fentanyl is so strong that only small amounts need to smuggled in compared to the tons of cannabis or other drugs. Which is harder to find and discover.
So essentially legalising cannabis did work and it removed the money from the criminals…but they fucked it by increasing opioid use.
I understand decriminalising softer drugs eg. Cannabis etc. but I do think if this was done across the board with harder drugs that it instantly makes them a little more acceptable to teens etc. who don’t know any better. And no, I don’t think education alone could be enough of a deterrent. Speaking from experience of being an idiotic teenager in the past.
M&S People Before Profit
They could give out free lines and I still would never vote labour.
Interesting but they’re probably lying
It’s about damn time we legislate this mess. Just think of the jobs it’ll create and the tax it’ll generate. There are no downsides to this. Its time to catch up with the rest of the world. Never again will we have to borrow from England or Europe.
Cynically looking for the youth vote. But i am for this.
So what we’re going to legalise all drugs now including fentanyl, meth, and heroine?
Personally I think people with liberal views of drug consumption focus on the wrong this regarding alcohol/caffeine/tobacco – yes, those are legal drugs, they are mind altering substances with harm potential that we absolutely don’t treat with respect in Ireland – but we should allow people to do things that harm them if they choose to do that.
Hear me out:
The philosophy of education and harm reduction is absolutely the best, proven, way to lower drug related violent crime, fatalities, overdoses, communicable illness and more. Criminalisation by design prevents harm reduction practices from being usable for the majority of substances. Look at the “no amnesty” at EP this year. Look at our rates of infectious hepatitis – look around any alleyway long enough and you’ll likely find paraphernalia. Would every single drug user engage with protected sharps bins and reagent kits EVERY time they use? No, but in an illegal climate people CAN’T avail of these things even if they were limitedly available for fear of persecution.
Even cannabis, a substance far safer and less addictive than any of the three legal ones I mentioned earlier, is causing issues that aren’t being spoken about in mainstream media due to laced product on the black market.
Criminalisation does not work point blank. It’s stupid moralising to pretend that it does anything other than make all drug related social issues worse. Personally I believe in the full decriminalisation of all drugs (yes, including The Bad Ones) because how is it helping addicts or society? Does anyone REALLY believe that heroin being illegal is the reason that people don’t try it? Comprehensive education of all common substances in our schools would go a long way to prevent damaging drug use, and if you think that it’s a gateway for children and teens then I have some news to tell you about what they already do when you’re not looking.
> decriminalising drugs in the Dáil
It’s a good start, but really we need to decriminalise them country-wide.
Didn’t the Dáil accidentally decriminalise MDMA for a day about 10 years ago?
I doubt anything will come of it, but it is good to see actual attempts being made to have a discourse on the topic that isn’t straight out of the 1950s.
Labour’s attempts to generate a bit of support from the younger cohort are still shite tbf
Before anyone says it, I’m not a dyed in the wool supporter of any of the rest but Labour should just be disbanded and rebuilt from scratch at this stage.
100% on side with this.
It is only a matter of time….I can’t wait because my wife gives me such a hard time over a few edibles. I will be able to turn around and say “Now! Can I just have my edible in peace” I love her to bits though!!
Shrooms?
It’s honestly the best way to take profit from criminal enterprise and stop feeding that system
A motion (meaningless signaling) or a bill (law)?
