There is absolutely no argument or evidence to support the use of voter ID. Especially given the significant risks and impact using them would have
I agree that if some age-specific Railcards are to be accepted then all such Railcards ought to be. But anyone without an existing photographic ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate and use that as ID when voting.
Just one plank in the Tories project to ensure those less likely to vote Tory are disenfranchised!
Are all those democratic countries engaged in voter oppression? Of course not.
People with nothing to lose are very dangerous and the younger generations are being denied everything. It’s only a matter of time before things kick off.
“If I am ever asked, on the streets of London, or in any other venue, public or private, to produce my ID card as evidence that I am who I say I am… then I will take that card out of my wallet and physically eat it in the presence of whatever emanation of the state has demanded that I produce it.”
Boris Johnson
So if they want ID why not do what Scotland does and issue everyone from 5-22 a bus pass with photo?
Why are people saying “you’ll be asked on the street for id”? It’s a voter card, not an ID…
Current ID is a passport and driver’s license, we don’t get stopped on the street as it is….
Why would it be an attack on me lol? Why would I be suppressed?
Voter ID isn’t a problem as long as there is a free and easy to access form of ID that can be used imo
I mean whilst I’m all keen for jumping on the outrage wagon from time to time, this does seem a bit of a hype article. Cards on the table, creating a vote ID card doesn’t appeal to me and seems a great waste of money, but voter suppression? I’m not so sure…. Genuinely curious as to what percentage of young people do not have – a student card or a driving/provisional license or other form off accept ID ( apparently 1% https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/voter-identification-photographic-id-ownership-in-great-britain). Also… what percentage of young people still use an Oyster card as opposed to a debit card or a mobile phone/ watch? I doubt it’s many… seems like this is just clickbait to me and underplays how important it is that we don’t find ourselves in a situation where democracy starts to become under threat because an ex leader campaigns relentlessly over loosing a fraudulent election.
Might as well register for an indefinite postal vote. That’s what I have and it’s good because it reminds me to vote in the smaller elections too.
Anyone, young or old who doesn’t have ID can get a free one from their local authority. You already have to register to vote, having to also apply for free ID is a minor extra step.
If people wish to vote and don’t have ID and for some reason also refuses to get a free ID, they can still apply to vote via post and have a ballot mailed out which they send back via free post.
Voter suppression! The next step to fascism after the Public Order Bill. We’re almost there folks!
What happened to the old Electoral ID cards we we’re given in school as we were approaching 18?
For example: over 60 oyster photo card counts. But not a normal 18+ oyster photo card for some reason
Absolutely intentional.
I don’t understand the fear around ID documents in this country. Growing up in SA I was excited to turn 16 and apply for my ID book.
Having an ID card that you produce at these types events is a good thing
How is it the Lord’s are more in line with what the public need than the MPs meant to represent them?
These checks and balances are backwards, has it always been this way?
This is absolutely a non-issue.
If you’re so detached from society that you can’t identify yourself then you’re not likely to be voting in the first place.
And if you can’t provide ID, you can’t have a bank account, drivers licence, security clearance, library card for goodness sake. You shouldn’t be allowed to vote.
I wish I hadn’t seen this. It terrifies me.
I said to somebody the other day that i think they will get another term in 2024. He was gobsmacked, asked me how that could be possible.
I said there were three basic way they could do it including outright theft. Like Bush did and trump tried to do. If you think these people are above that I don’t know what to tell you…
But another thing is continuing to rig the the electoral system in their favour. I knew this was on the cards, but this is the first time i have heard the specifics.
Is it hardcore verification? like only government issued photo ID?
are they backdooring ID cards by ant chance?!
Fucking hell how many options for the over 60’s the best bit is though they aren’t used to taking I’d with them and will hopefully forget
£180,000,000 a decade down the drain to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. The only reason for this is to disincentives young and poor voters, but that’s hardly surprising of this government is it.
If the government requires something to vote, the government should be made to make every effort to make that item free and convenient for all voters to get.
Papers!
Anyway you just need to look at the US to see how they want the UK to go. Every step in that direction should be stopped.

G’day, kids. You’ve been disenfranchestrated.
Is that the right word?

Voter ID is common across the world.

First i thought it was a silly exaggeration but then I read
[the list](https://www.electoral-reform.org.uk/voter-id-list-gives-few-options-for-younger-voters/) and it’s actually stupid as hell where they specifically say that only travel cards for 60/65+ are okay but not the equivalent for younger.
