*Something something* can’t be *something* overnight.
Note that they confuse ‘homelessness’ with ‘in emergency accommodation’
Snakey way to keep the numbers artificially low and they still end up exceptionally high.
3,480 children, in emergency accommodation? Is this o gormans responsibility? It’s in his title? Or O” brien? Housing in the title? It would be my number one priority if I was in either role.
>Leo Varadkar has admitted that the rise in homelessness is “extremely disturbing” as the government came under major pressure over the latest figures showing almost 10,000 people in emergency accommodation.
>He told the Oireachtas Finance Committee that **tackling housing and homelessness is a government priority** …
That’s from **4 and half years ago**, they don’t give a single shit about it at all.
Morphing into FFG hasn’t budged the dial either.
What amazes me is what it says about how happy they are to degrade the Ireland their children & grandchildren (will) have to live in.
You’d think they’d care more about that. Not that there’s a great track record in caring for children and their futures from Irish governments, but still.
Breaking record after record. Great job, guys. You’re nothing if not consistent.
FFG: “What housing crisis?”
Ah c’mon, guys. Don’t be too harsh; we’re doing well finding accommodation for asylum seekers and that counts for something! ♥
>It called on Government “to focus on the 166,000 vacant homes
This year will see 80k refugees, 20k asylum and 40k international visas. At no time ever does the government say that immigration needs to be moderated a bit.
>the failure of successive governments has led to a crisis where nearly 3,500 children will spend Christmas in emergency accommodation. Too many of these children were born into homelessness this year and will spend their first ever Christmas in this world as homeless. Words cannot properly express how morally wrong it is that this is happening.”
If the vacant home can be converted, CPO them. Otherwise build. If that can’t be done maybe immigration needs to be moderated a bit so that children are not living in homelessness and young adults don’t miss the chance to start a family.
In the past few days people have been trying to deny these people homes on this very subreddit.
The focus, before we try and sort out the rest of society, has to be on getting the children out of emergency accomodation and into homes. If the AHBs are doing this by building and buying estates then we shouldn’t be begrudging them.
Then we need to focus on making sure that emergency accomodation never reaches these levels again.
We need supply. Supply supply supply supply supply. Get rid of planning, get rid of height restrictions, bring builders and labourers over by the shipload from Georgia, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Moldova, Ukraine. Just get them here and let’s get building asap.
might aswell go somewhere and seek asylum, seems the only way to be actually housed
