I dunno why people think that the state’s housing policy is incompetent. The National Development Plan is specifically designed to make sure there aren’t enough houses allowed to be built in places where people want to live.
Paywall – any chance of the text?
Calling it incompetence is letting them off the hook.
Oh nooo, Iseult! Lookie here! The working class plebs are being hoodwinked by the faaaawr roysh. Thank God we don’t have that faaaawr roysh here in Dalkey.
No shit.
It won’t happen at the next election as the protest vote has all flocked to SF. However unless SF solve it, and they’ve shown little to prove they can, then desperate people will turn to anyone who can find someone to blame for the problem. The sad thing is that it’s utterly predictable.
I’m surprised it hasn’t happened already to be honest. Ireland has shown itself to be very resistant to far right movements if the performance of groups like the National Party, Pegida, Aontu and some other fringe groups is to be taken into account.
Compare it to most other western counties where there are clear right wing, and often far right wing, parties and we seem to have really avoided it so far.
There’s a policy?
Right now Sinn Fein absorb a lot of what would be right wing voters in any other country. Ireland for the Irish, help ourselves first, working class “Irish patriot” types. Once the shinners have a run at power and there are still tens of thousands of people coming in and housing stock continues to be tight, those people will realize Sinn Fein doesn’t represent them and look elsewhere. That’s when we’ll see the growth of a real right wing party here.
“Opinion polls and the kindness of individuals and communities around the country say otherwise.”
The kindness of individuals, which she references, I don’t doubt but true opinion polls, which she doesn’t, do they actually say otherwise?
The lack of a charismatic right wing populist is a limiting factor too. I don’t see any Farage type, that’s managed to dress up the xenophobia/racism in a suitable smiling face… “I’m not a racist, but…….” way.
I don’t see it myself, but somehow these Trump types manage to have a persona that draws right wingers to them. Bless those poor fools in the National Party, but they are just thick enough to name their Nazi party the “National” Party. Let alone having any charm.
Probably if a demagogue does emerge, it’ll be more like Johnson. A populist power grab by some right winger in mainstream politics. Hopefully the checks and balances to counter act this have improved since Haughey’s time.
They will only get bigger. Not sure why we’re calling the right the far right now though.
They’re still just the right.
It’s amazing to see the mouthpieces try to push the agenda that it’s only housing. Completely out of touch.
But as she says, it isn’t a reason to not take refugees.
