This is at public charge points. Yes it is a ridiculous increase, and price gouging, but if you are able to charge at home like the majority of EV owners then it doesn’t really affect you. I charge maybe once every two months at a public charger.
At home with my smart meter plan I charge between 2-4 AM for 9c a KWh. I average 1200 KM a month and last month cost me €38.
These headlines are a bit misleading, but hey, it’s the Indo.
They do need to do something for apartment dwellers though. Owners should have to retrofit chargers in the car park if we are gonna go majority EV.
So can everyone catch up and realise it’s hydrogen we need.
Can you really be surprised that the automotive industry dupped us again after the whole diesel thing.
I mean, it’s not as bad as the UK, where some networks were at 1£/kwh for a while, and this increase is really not pleasant, but honestly?
Even with my 8 year old dinky fuck all range leaf, I do 95% of my charging at home, and I’m doing 3000km a month most months.
But fuel cost aside, I still wouldn’t switch back to burning dinosaur juice.
We have had our VW ID3 since June. We have paid for power a sum total of twice. Both costing around €8. The reason? Free charge ports all over Dublin and my wife just happens to work right next to a load of them. We charge up once a week.
So people can believe what they want, for us, moving to electric has cost us very little in the way of day to day costs. That may change but for now it’s a sweet deal. Oh and we have put in around 3000kms
I got pv panels so I charge mostly for free ( 3,500eur) for the panels after grant
If you bought an EV and were 100% dependent on public chargers you’d most likely have a price plan with a monthly subscription so you would not pay these headline numbers. For example, pay-as-you-go at Ionity is 0.71 EUR/ kWh but 0.34 EUR/ kWh with a monthly subscription.

1. There’s people says you’d be mad to get an electric car. Yes, if you have to charge for a significant portion charing with ESB chargers it’d be expensive. What is mad is not transitioning to electric and using ICE cars which are much more polluting and less efficient.
2. More positively SSE are brining in chargers I’ve heard so more competition.
Was only a matter of time before this would happen.
I’m all for the switch to EVs but Ireland has a shite charging platform.
There’s either not enough working or there’s not enough to go around.
Just look at how Norway has it… Amazing
They’re eventually gonna make running an EV the same as running an ICE car.
That’s why they’re so eager for people to get smart meters and use them. They’ll know when you’re charging your car so they’ll jack up prices when you’re charging. Won’t happen in the next few years but I’d imagine they’ll do it when there’s not many options for 2nd hand ICE cars due to the banning of their production from 2030 I think it is.
Look how much revenue is missed now when someone has an EV. Lower tolls, lower parking, lower tax from refueling, lower motor tax. You think governments etc are gonna let everyone away with that in future?

Most of the public charging infrastructure stands as a monument to corruption and ignorance anyway. They’re all practically useless. Most are not fast charging, so you’d need to leave your car parked there all day/overnight, but most of the public chargers are in places where this isn’t possible.
All my charging needs are charging at home and commercial fast chargers to help me get round on long trips. Not once was it convenient or practical for me to charge at an ESB charger.
Alarmist title. This only refers to their public charging points, not home charging. Regardless of that it’s an outrageous and indefensible price hike.
I charge at night on the lower tariff. A full tank 360km motorway driving costs me about €13.
Yep, electric cars are definitely the future 👍
They really aren’t the future. Their only purpose is to save the car industry
Politicians don’t read comments or reddit posts, email your local government TD. Here’s an example, there’s Greens Patrick Costello, bit of a hero in my mind, if he’s your local TD, look at the little hand, send your email to that. What do you say? Well… whatever you were going to say here but more angry. Unless your comment was “hilarious” then you’re not going to bother. https://i.imgur.com/4kEIfBr.jpg
I don’t see the issue here. You should have to pay for the privilege of using public infrastructure. Expecting everything for free is ridiculous.
This government fucking S U C K
Don’t worry. Eamon Ryan will keep EVs as the cheaper option by whacking a few more massive increases onto the carbon taxes for petrol and diesel.
If you were looking to get solar panels, who would you recommend?
I see a crowd called [MySolar.ie](https://MySolar.ie) are out and about (and I like them instinctively, because they give upfront pricing on their website) but are there any reasons to pick someone else?

Their site says 4 panels for electric only (we don’t have an immersion system for water as we have a combi boiler) would cost 3k to install. Seems reasonable if it can actually knock 50% off an ESB bill.. but it almost seems too good to be true..
This only applies to ESB public charging points. If someone can’t charge their car at home then they probably shouldn’t consider buying an electric car since they need to take up public spaces (not free) and then keep that space for many hours at a time to charge their car.
The article says: “There are alternatives however and drivers can get cheaper rates if they are able to charge at home, and cheaper again if they can avail of smart meter rates.”
misleading headline, only if tyou pay a premium for superchargers every single time
Suprised Face
Effing clowns.. how is this to encourage to switch, bad enough they cost alot to buy.. they have no idea how the world works.
That article should say how many miles you get for a kilowatt hour, how many miles you get for a litre of diesel and how many miles you get for a litre of petrol it’s a load of bollocks, rip off Republic bought to you by the cartels and the irish Times blueshirts

I wonder if that will apply to the [charging points at Leinster House](https://m.independent.ie/irish-news/politicians-charge-electric-cars-at-leinster-house-for-less-than-half-the-price-public-are-paying-41940709.html) as well
