Why in seven shades of hell is this headline not ‘Irish government tells accommodation providers to stop being dicks about pets’
Dogs will want to stay and fight anyway.
Fuckin govermint cant even luk after der own pets n all
Fuck the heartless cunts here. Pets are part of your family.
Anyone else read that headline and think the refugees are fleeing from Ireland and the government wants to keep their pets in Ireland?
There are two black and white reactions to this:
* Irish government being heartless bastards as per usual.
* Who cares about pets when your life is at stake.
Personally, I can understand the rationale of prioritising living conditions for people over pets.
However, asking people who have already lost so much- many of whom are already leaving spouses behind- to also leave their pets? It’s heartbreaking.
Furthermore, I think any such request should also feature an addendum, so that it reads as:
>Please find alternative accommodation for your pets, or leave them behind, because we’ve been kicking the can down the road on housing for the last decade, and you shall now pay the price of our incompetence, indifference and malice.
I feel like that just paints a more accurate picture.
When refugees are being housed in hotels, you can see why they wouldn’t want people bringing over cats and dogs… At the same time, can also see how heartbreaking it’d be for someone to leave a pet behind
No. Just no. Losing so much, and having to give up a member of your family? No way. I could never give up my dog. She wouldn’t understand why I had just left her, and that would haunt me for the rest of my life.
Ireland is anti-pet in general though, especially dogs. This is not surprising at all after having lived there with a couple of dogs.
Fully understand the reasons why, but man, that’s heartbreaking
I completely understand the need to take their pets with them, they are family members. If I was told I had to leave my pets behind then I think I would rather die at home with my pets than flee abroad without them. It’s utterly heartbreaking. Hopefully those who arrive with pets will be able to find some kind hearted Irish families nearby to foster them until they find their feet here and get their animals back. For me giving up my pets would be akin to giving up my child, I’d be too broken.
Not a chance I would leave my dog behind
Ignore the Irish government for the incompetent eejits they are, bring your pet
My dog doesn’t agree with gov on this one.
Ukrainian Ambassador in outraged, entitled rant about how we’re not being generous enough in 5…4…3
This is heartbreaking for the Ukrainian refugees, but I can understand this.
Ireland is Rabies free, Ukraine isn’t. We have to protect that.
Its heartbreaking to leave behind a pet, a family member but you seriously cannot expect a country to house you, your family and your pets. Thats utterly ridiculous. We have enough strays and enough animal welfare organisations here, an overpopulation of animals being neglected etc. We cannot afford to be offering strays veterinary care etc, or expecting hotels that are not pet friendly to all of a sudden except pets. Its so very heartbreaking tho, I understand the juxtaposition of my words. I certainly could not leave my pets behind.
If war broke out my dog is staying with me no matter what. She just as important as any other member of the family
Why didn’t they ban pets at the start? People were raising the possible risk of rabies.
Ah, fleeing *to* here. Was very confused
Its harsh but I can kind of understand. Its harder to home you, is Ukraine rabies free?
So is it possible to inoculate, quarantine them and then find fosters for them as they do with some domestic violence shelters?
I could foster a cat pretty easily. I’d say dog too but my landlord wouldn’t want it.
Ugh… another layer of unthinkable devastation associated with fleeing a war-torn country. I imagine this must be an absolutely traumatising thing to have to do.
Seem harsh at first, but it’s entirely understandable and the right thing to do.
We’re one of the few rabies free countries. That reason alone necessitates this.
