Make Amazon Pay – Do Not Shop On Amazon On Black Friday in solidarity with Amazon workers, unions, citizens and many coalitions. Amazon is cutting real wages, union busting, spying on workers and more. A 20% cut in traffic, even for a single day, has significant effects. More info in the comments.

  1. You won’t find much support here sadly.
Since rip-off Ireland is alive and well, anything that can compete with local prices will be supported.

  2. Cost of living is high in Ireland, people no longer have the same disposal income to shop (*after all other rising bills). OP where are you from/living?

As much as we can try, when given a choice for cheaper goods , people will gravitate towards sales and a cheaper competitive price.

  3. Folks if you have a job (or ever had a job) your ‘side’ is other people with jobs like Amazon workers. Your ‘side’ is not jeff besoz or Elon musk.

If you don’t start showing some goddamn solidarity with the people that are on your side soon you are going to get eaten alive.

  4. it is the worst thing about irish culture that behaving like a selfish rat is done proudly with a ‘lol im definitely betraying workers if it means I get a hair curler/ amazon colourful light/ playstation for cheap!”.

It’s not just sleazy it’s dumb as shit.

  5. Nah shits expensive enough as it. Going to get a few Xmas presents sorted without leaving the throne.

  6. I bought a coffee grinder off amazon in Jan 2020. It started playing up a few weeks ago. Messaged amazon to see if there was anything I could do. I honestly just wanted a repair.
They ended up shipping me an entirely new unit. I waited til it arrived, 2 days later, returned my old unit. They refunded me the cost of postage.

I like amazon. I don’t like their shitty work practices, but I want a company that does what amazon does. I just want amazon to improve their work practices and that is most likely to happen through labour organising.

  7. Buy Irish.

    +75% the price.

Ship when Kevin comes in next tuesday. He knows where the labels are.

Send it cheap. Fastway’s yer man. Allow 21 days for delivery.

We’ll only put half your address characters on as sage can’t handle that many characters.

    “Broke?” Ring Samsung.

Send it back. 3 phone calls and 4 emails. “We’ve no real way of refunding as our banks not set up like that, but here’s a voucher to start the whole process over again”

  8. If the workers are being treated like shit, how about they leave and find a better job? That’s what I did (I never we worked for Amazon, just left a lowly paid shitty job).

  9. I told a fella I work with that I was getting a new television from Amazon to watch the World Cup on and he went on a rant and told me I should be getting it from a bricks and mortar store and supporting local mom and pop’s stores. The fella was from Longford.

  10. I tried collecting alternative websites here in this sub. Near to no responses. I can’t just buy stuff elsewhere at 2x the price though. I can get SOME things from, say, screwfix and smythstoys, but that’s kind of the extense of my knowledge.

What I mean is a call to action should be: BUY HERE INSTEAD: [list]!, not DON’T BUY FROM X.

  11. What are the best alternatives when it comes to PC components? Paradigit.ie(Formerly Komplette) has very little options, Curry’s are just outright thieves when it comes to prices

  12. It depends on what you are looking for. I do a lot of woodworking as a hobby and have gone into local hardware shops numerous times looking for some tools that aren’t exactly commonplace but hardly niche either.

90% of the time they don’t have what I’m looking for and when they do I’m paying through the nose for it. I’ve cut down on Amazon massively since a Screwfix opened near to me.

I know a lot of other hobbyists are in the same position when it comes to shopping local versus Amazon.

I understand Amazon are really taking the piss with their job practices but what about the thousands of people working in local retail / hospitality who are also being treated like dirt potentially.

I’m not saying two wrongs make a right but it’s become very trendy to shit on Amazon lately when they are clearly providing a service that works for the consumer.

  13. Eh we have workers rights here in Ireland as far as I’m aware. America needs to sort itself out. We have bigger issues here. If amazon started selling houses we’d be buying them in droves.

  14. I’m all for Amazon but this seems to all be in their US sites

So you know, not my problem when it comes to getting Christmas gifts discounted that I can actually afford

  15. Have to love the people of the internet and in particular reddit and twitter for constantly feeling the need to let you know they care anything and everything way more than you ever could. Just your typical daily reminder to let you know how big of a piece of shit you really are.

  16. Is Amazon shit for workers? Completely! Beyond convenience of shipping, can I as a consumer afford to buy Irish online or offline, sadly not. If my wage goes up or my rent and bills go down to a point that I can, I’ll switch and pay the premium for it.

  17. Amazon have just had a massive expansion in Ireland. They now employ over 5000 people here, and unlike in other countries, they aren’t laying any of them off. They’re all protected by Irish employment law. There is no “union busting” here.
Plus, amazon provides online sales services for lots of small businesses. Should we be boycotting them too?

As for not shopping on Black Friday… Black Friday isn’t a thing in Ireland. It’s just Friday.

  18. Nah I’ll use Amazon way cheaper and arrives when it’s supposed to and has fantastic customer service fuck most Irish retailers using 17 year old erp systems

  19. No can do!
Good example why…husband needed a drill bit for a job he is doing. Rang 3 places in Dublin “no don’t stock it” and it was three times the price.
Ordered it on amazon and it came the next day.
Plus if it helps me save some money I will do it.

Plus the government don’t want people in town. Traffic is a nightmare, parking prices are horrendous. Buses aren’t reliable. So no, I won’t be shopping in town either.

Another example, a toothbrush I was looking at was €400 in Boots. On Amazon Germany it was €110. How can you bypass that?

  20. But where will I get my industrial fuck machine with free dildo and other attachments? 🤷

  21. They are protesting outside the office tomorrow according to their twitter, how is that going to affect anything? They’ll likely all just stay home and what about the other two companies that operate out of that building?

  22. I’m not in Ireland, but I work for Amazon. In the online sales division, but not in a fulfillment center A 20% drop in sales would put all 1,200 people at my site out of work and Amazon is the only employer around that pays close to a living wage. You might not like the business practices, but there are tens of thousands of people who rely on these jobs and can’t get other ones with the pay and benefits because there aren’t any. Personal choice is personal choice, but a sustained effort to hurt sales is a sustained effort to directly hurt people who have nothing to do with making those business decisions.

  23. Amazon employ a lot of people here. Especially in tech and they are well paid and contributing significant taxes.

  24. Wanted to try this, went looking around for a few bits for Christmas shopping and the prices I saw I wouldn’t eve call sales. It’s impossible to shop in store with the prices of stuff it’s just far cheaper online.

  25. If someone can tell me where I can buy decent 3D printer filament locally I’ll happily buy it because buying in bulk when it’s on sale on Amazon is currently my only option.

I bought local last year and dealt with clogged printers until I threw the stuff out.

  26. I didn’t order from Amazon today because of this post, I used V for Very instead. I think Very is the replacement for family album. I’m happy with the special offers I got there.
