Suella Braverman fails to explain how theoretical asylum seeker could get to UK safely and legally | Politics News

  1. I can’t stand this woman. She should never have been given a position in government after breaching security last time. Something dodgy going on there, imo.

  2. “If you put in your claim for asylum on arrival, that would be the process that you enter”

Cool so takes about 5 seconds for the Home Secretary pushing this far-right “invasion” narrative to completely blow this “illegal immigrants” line out of the water. If you claim for asylum, you *cannot* be an illegal immigrant until your claim is assessed and potentially rejected. Up until that point you are a perfectly legal asylum seeker who has had to undertake a dangerous journey because the UK government has closed safe routes to anywhere but a handful of high-publicity warzones.

Will any of her fans in the public notice? Of fucking course not.

e – And after watching the whole thing of course she repeatedly claims to apparently know basically nothing about her own department and about a issue she has so frequently gone to the press claiming she is passionate about. Again, will any fans of this lot give a flying fuck that their “team” is represented by apparently clueless idiots, no of course they bloody won’t.

  3. Sure she does. But the asylum law system is a product of pandering to conservative voters who **know** that even legitimate asylum seekers can’t come to the UK, **and they don’t care**. Hell, some of them actively like it. This is literally what they’re voting for.

  4. Leave it at

    “Suella Braverman fails to explain”

I don’t think she knows what she’s about to say looking back at some of her house of commons performances

  5. This should be one of the easiest, most fundamental questions the Home Secretary should be able to answer. Especially if your whole spiel is around immigration and asylum. It makes me endlessly frustrated how transparent the obfuscation has become, and how easy it is to rile people up without bothering to look at laws or facts. A proper debate on the issue will always be impossible if we allow extreme figure heads to get to this position.

  6. The Torries don’t want to fix the migrant crisis. If they do they won’t have anything to campaign in the next election.

  7. It’s worth remembering that under international law:

    * It’s not illegal to migrate.
    * It’s not illegal to apply for asylum.
    * It’s a legal requirement to assess the application for asylum and issue a finding.

There are no illegal migrants anywhere in the world, never have been. The British PM is not well informed and all the people down from there who use the term.

  8. This isn’t about her misunderstanding or failing to come up with an answer.

The UK asylum system is set up in a way so that you cannot claim asylum (with the exception of countries you could count on one hand) unless you are physically in the UK.

This forces people to arrive ‘illegally’ through channels that endanger human life.

It’s set up like this deliberately so that it deters people fleeing persecution and conflict and immediately criminalises anyone who attempts to claim asylum.

It’s gross, disgusting and edging us closer and closer to fascism.

  9. Imagine if we asked for any sort of standards or integrity from our officials. The country would be such a better place if there was consequences for lying or just being plainly bad at your job.

  10. They cannot, however that honesty does not sell papers and does not cause the same emotional response in those whose votes she is trying to win. The way the migrant crossings has been framed by the right is all about making people afraid of ‘an invasion’ and angry at the migrants being put up in hotels paid for by the taxpayer. The Tories know it is a vote-winner and are stoking the flames to avoid people looking at the real issue: the asylum process as a whole. When properly scrutinised, it is easy to see the Tory argument fall apart, which is why they are so keen to never answer questions on it to begin with.

  11. I suspect because she doesn’t want them too, this ghoul would probably sell tickets to trophy hunt asylum seekers if she could.

I’m not saying open the borders for everyone, that doesn’t work and is unsustainable but where is the empathy

  12. What a sad state of affairs. Really embarrassing. The Tories are no longer fit to govern this country.
I’ve always opposed them but the lack of ability has been apparent for quite a long time .

  13. She’s an arsehole and out of her depth. She’s typical of what they Tory MP declared to be talentless people in the cabinet.

Not only that, but she’s a security hazard.

This is the best the Tory party have to offer the country.

Apathy and stupidity has led to this country having the worst government ever.

  14. A racist bitch with the intelligence of a block of cheese will never have the capability of any compation

  15. Their are so much misinformation from everything it’s hard to believe anyone is telling the truth it just keeps getting worse 🥺

  16. I’ve never ever understood how one person can be chancellor, secretary for sport, for health, for foreign affairs, …

I understand that they have “aides” but surely it’s time to shift our global governments to a technocracy. People making decisions need to actually understand wtf is going on.

  17. Everyone with half a brain knows the Tories will say anything and do nothing on immigration. It creates fear that they can exploit.

  18. Imagine not being sympathetic to Asylum Seekers, this woman and her predecessor were quite prepared to let children drown in the Channel. If the Asylum system actually worked there would be no issues.

People have travelled from across the globe to get to our shores (despite it being run by fuclwits) and our initial response is to dump them in prisons and attempt to poison them with dreadful living conditions and disease.

This woman is a racist and a bigot, her cruel streak is observable from space. She needs to get gone.

  19. She literally had to stop talking to avoid dropping herself and the junta in the shit. This is what happens when you lie on your CV.

  20. What it comes down to with anti asylum seeker types is “not our problem, leave it to Greece, Italy and Spain”

  21. Focusing your anger at suella herself is fun as she’s a pantomime joke of an MP, but she’s only continuing the same wink and nod circular policies of her last three predecessors.

There is no logic to what they are doing because it’s obvious, and possibly illegal, but it has a means to an end which they can’t achieve any other way. Like brexit for that matter.

  22. I’m so glad the conversation seems to FINALLY be shifting towards the real reason why people are getting in dangerous boats across the channel. That is to say, the complete absence of legal and safe routes.

There are trains and planes into the UK regularly which are much cheaper and safer than paying people smugglers. But the UK government won’t be seen to be making the asylum process “easier” by allowing overseas applications, instead opting for performance pieces like the Rwanda project.

  23. Easy.

Have lots of money, pay various officials “processing fees”, arrive on a jet in the middle of a pandemic, and get chauffered to your expensive home.

Wait? You don’t have money? You’re running for your life? You are facing rape, torture and death where you barely escaped from? You have no other hope but to seek asylum in the strongest foreign country you can think of? Is Britain the one safe place on earth that your parents told you about? Is Britain the beacon of hope you have been betting your whole life on?

So you say you have no money?

  24. An asylum seeker should seek asylum in the first safe country they passage in to, regardless of where they would like to go. Once safe, then become a migrant.

Somebody migrating should apply or register through the appropriate channels.

Where there are mitigating circumstances, currently Ukraine, measures are put in place.
