Hi Guys , i am planning to visit your beautiful country first time on upcoming christmas. As I am currently located in poland so I will be visiting high tatras. i did some reasearch and found out zdiar and poprad are two hidden gems in the area for chill and leisure weekend.

Though I am confused in which town i should book my stay (considering they are 1 hour away from
Each other) what you guys would suggest would be a better idea and what might be something that i shouldnt miss around these cities.

i am not into skiing or any hardcore winter activities and just want to explore more of slovakian mountains , beautiful landscapes, nice local cuisine , relax and roam around in the city.

Any suggestions would be helpful 🙌

Edit: after reading your comments i realise theres a lot of beautiful places in and around of those areas , I would highly appreciate if you suggest something else entirely but with good connectivity to train system. Though skiing is not at all my priority.   1. Well Zdiar is a tiny village with 2k people and Poprad is a sprawling city with 50k people, vastly different vibes…

    Also, Zdiar is not even actually located in High Tatras, that region is called “Belianske Tatry”, while Poprad is directly under High Tatras and is connected to lots of other tourist destinations there by a light rail system…

    I only have experiences with staying in Zdiar and its area. It is a cute village near the border with cheap accomodations. I rented a room there last spring for a ridiculous amount with breakfast. Stary Smokovec, Zakopane, Poprad, Lomnic, Belianske Tatry, Vrbov Thermal, Belianska jaskyna are just a few ideas, which worth a visit and they aren’t so far from Zdiar.

    I wish you a good winter holiday, I would love to go too, I’m in love with High Tatras.😊

  3. Do you want to stay in the area or want to visit other places? Do you have a car?

    Poprad is a “city” with good rail and tram (to High Tatra) connection. If you have no car but want to visit other places go to Poprad.

    If you want to stay away and have some local trips, go to Zdiar 🙂

  4. definitely zdiar. and pick one of the fancy cottages on airbnb or booking.com . don’t go with hotels

  5. Poprad is not a hidden gem, people usually stay in towns like stary smokovec, tatranska lomnica or strbske pleso when visiting high tatras – it’s closer to the mountains.
