Taoiseach calls PBP TDs ‘Puppets for Putin’ in Dáil exchanges over NATO assessors in Cork hills

  1. I don’t like how quickly it became acceptable for the government to label opposition’s parties traitors to the state for asking reasonable questions about our military involvement with NATO during an ongoing war.

Our neutrality has always given us a strong diplomatic position. It was out neutrality that kept us off the radar for terrorist attacks by Al-Qaeda during the war on terror.

  2. Micheal Martin trying to be clever just doesn’t work.

Can’t believe this utter gobshite, who had a senior ministerial position when they bankrupted this country and was in amongst all the FF cronies got back to be Taoiseach 12 years later.

  3. I’ve been at PBP events or at least events with PBP on their posters with PBP speakers where prominent attendees have said stuff like Putin is going to save us from capitalism and large numbers of Soviet flags and USSR (CCCP) t-shirts were common. This was pre covid

  4. Saw [this tweet](https://twitter.com/paulmurphy_TD/status/1597901921393987584) from Paul Murphy in response to the incident

    > This is extremely dangerous authoritarian rhetoric by the Taoiseach portraying the opposition as agents of a foreign state.

    >PBP have been much more consistent opponents of Putin than Fianna Fail has.

    > He should withdraw his comments and apologise.

It appears from a read through the article that Martin resorted to absurd smears instead of a substantive dialogue on the matter at hand.

  5. Every time he gets flustered by the opposition he breaks out the IRA and Putin accusations. He’s like those folk who go around calling everyone a literal Nazi for not agreeing with them

  6. Extraordinary stuff from a govt that has appointed an agent of a foreign power, who has sworn an oath of loyalty to a foreign power, as head of the Irish state security apparatus. Who have destroyed the Irish Defence forces. Who have allowed a foreign power to operate their air force in Irish airspace. Who send Irish taxpayers money to loyalist community groups in the North. Whose Taoiseach suggested that unionist votes should count for more than nationalist in any border poll. And this govt thinks it’s in a position to call other TDs puppets of a foreign power?

  7. Martin is right. Murphy and co are a disgrace. He’d have Ukraine left completely toothless to be rolled over, his every single utterance on this war would benefit Russia if put into action and I really don’t give a shit how much he tries to concern troll his way out of it.

Ohhh look at the downvotes. TANKIES, ACTIVATE!

  8. Good old Paul Murphy who opposed Ireland helping Ukraine defuse landmines (which disproportionately affect civilians) and instead said we should “loudly condemn Russia”.

  9. Genuinely very concerning rhetoric here. Accuse domestic opposition of being foreign puppets is basically rule number 1 in the authoritarian textbook.

Aren’t there rules against this sort of thing?

Plus I seem to recall Fianna Fail ministers meeting up with Vlad during the chechnyan war and at the G8 summit in the North, while people who would become PbP protested both.

  10. Politics and Neutrality aside, what is it with the far left? They can be almost screaming and frothing at the mouth, how everybody an inch to the right of them, are evil people motivated by the worst instincts, but at the slightest push back they howl at the unique injustice.

It’s a bit cringe to be honest. It’s the political equivalent of the toddler in the supermarket shitting his pants and howling because Mammy took the sweets back out of trolley.

  11. We are part of the partnership for peace. That was the banner under which the NATO visit was made. Why does everything always have to be a fucking conspiracy??

Putting that aside, Martin is some dopey bollocks for not addressing this directly and going on the attack instead. Like, all he had to say was it’s part of our obligations under the PFP program.

  12. In fairness to PBP, they might be be Marxist to the core, but they have been publicly critical of Putin all through the Ukraine crisis.

Their former colleague Clare Daly is doing them no favours though as she’s very much associated with the AAA parties and is basically one of Putin’s scraggly lapdogs in the European Parliament
