Keir Starmer attacks ‘weak’ Rishi Sunak over non-dom tax breaks

  1. The US doesn’t have an equivalent to a non-dom status, I’ve known Americans who work over here who’ve had to give up their citizenship (an expensive process in itself, and obviously with more than just financial implications) just to avoid paying tax in the country of their birth and the country of their residence. Do we really want to put genuine expats through that? Maybe the rules should be tweaked but they shouldn’t be scrapped entirely.

Political contributions from non-doms should be illegal of course.

  2. As with many issues regarding the rich, Sunak will do nothing (or as close to nothing as possible) as long as those closest to him continue to benefit from them. That is the point Starmer really needs to hammer home here. We know Sunak is weak but people need to be reminded why he is refusing to act and that is because he wants to protect the interests of a select few over those of the country as a whole.

  3. Non-doms and IR35 are two things that benefit his wife and her Infosys, so there is no chance in the world that he is going to do anything about it.

    Indian business above British.
