Government to hold referendums on housing and water

  1. That referendum on water ownership may have been THE issue in 2014, but 8 years have passed since then and Irish Water are just quietly collecting the funding without doing much with it. Its nice to do it, but the time to do it was years ago.

  2. Let me guess the referendum question will be. Should the government try to fix the housing crisis, even if their only solution to the problem will be the introduction of water charges and further deregulation of banker’s bonuses?

  3. Won’t pass judgement until we have the wording of the choices, but I will admit I am skeptical about them.

  4. As a regular poll worker, I think a referendum is long overdue! Better to separate them too, so focus is kept on each important issue. Should be at least 1 referendum every year imo

  5. Hold up, what exactly is it they plan to add to or change in the constitution if the majority say yes? I’m a bit rusty on referenda, are we allowed to have a vote put to the people to gauge public opinion or do all referenda in this country have to relate to additions or amendments to the constitution? Or have I got two completely different situations mixed up and the people can be asked to vote on a piece of legislation if the President is unsure on a piece of legislation having consulted with the Council of State but doesn’t want to go to the Supreme Court?
