Lifting of restrictions on bankers’ bonuses ‘really twisted’, say Sinn Féin

  1. Hugh O’Connell tweeted this from the exchange – gave me a laugh…

“Micheál Martin hits back st Sinn Féin criticism.

“You had a more unorthodox way of bailing out banks in your time,” he tells the Dáil. “You went for the more direct action.””

  2. A €20,000 limit seems fine to me for the top workers in banks? Hell, my bonus next year could be €8-10k and I’m just some guy. Imagine the bonus IT and tech sector heads will get. If we want good people to work in the banking sector then the total reward package needs to at least come close to the norm in the private sector at large.

  3. This is a massive nothingburger compared to the array of problems the country is dealing with. This is just typical Shinner grandstanding.

  4. Most banks don’t pay anywhere near the upper limit except for the ones at the very top, removing the cap would only benefit the people already rich.

  5. Is she braindead, does she not realise banks need to be able to attract top talent. They can’t do that if they don’t pay as well as other companies.

  6. Sinn Fein are going to cripple middle Ireland when they get a chance. Between them and the Greens, we’ll have the most miserable miserly government in recent Irish history.

  7. FF/FG see the end is near and are now allowing as many of their friends to line the nests which in turn will fill their pockets. Martin, Varadkar and Ryan should be put against a wall and shot for treason against the country.

  8. Typical European bank would be €1m+ base with potentially 100% bonus. If we can’t pay for the right people, our banking sector will suffer (currently highest mortgage rates in the EU, apps are all shite, in house IT from the Stone Age)

  9. Just imagine that there was another story going on at the moment that you needed divert the media’s attention away from in regards to SF. 20k cap is reasonable. In my industry bonuses are well over that per year for anyone who manages people. It is simply a carrot to prevent them from jumping from job to job rather than it being part of their base pay. You get some attrition after the bonus is paid out yes but less than if it was part of base pay.
