Imagine these junctions are controlled by traffic light which operate simultaneously. The red car wants to turn to their left and the purple car wants to turn to their right (as in they’ll both be travelling the same direction) when the lights go green – who has right of way?

  1. Red car. They dont have to cross the intersection to complete their turn. And theyre still going in the flow of traffic. The purple car needs to wait until the lane is done turning before entering the intersection to complete their turn.

It would be no different than if the red car were going straight and the purple car still wanted to turn right. Theyd need to wait for the intersection to clear.

Generally speaking an intersection like this would have a sign saying “right turn yield on green” for the purple car as well as for the red car.

  2. Both approach the centre line and rock paper scissors for it, but do it fast because the approaching learner driver won’t know what’s happening

  3. Red car because he’s closest to the left lane on the road he’s joining. The purple car has to cut across traffic.

  4. Left priority means that the person turning left as priority before people turning right… at least in Ireland.
    This is a basic rule

  5. I assume all of you saying red are intentionally excluding the blue car because its on the main road right? Cause if you aren’t… lmao

  6. Car that doesn’t have to cross the road/junction has priority, so red has priority. / it’s easier for red to progress

  7. No idea but that thanks for the reminder to read back over the rules of the road before starting my lessons in Jan!

  8. in 10 years of driving in Ireland, I learned that people really dont know how to act on these junctions – and this one pictured above is actually pretty good – as its marked.

I moved recently into a town in Wicklow, and there was this exact junction, but without traffic lights.

People were so confused as of who goes first, that everyone was standing and pointing and letting others go. Many accidents happened there.

It was madness – this year they finally made a roundabout instead

  9. The Deliveroo cyclist who’s going to appear like a bleedin Pokémon out of absolutely nowhere, no lights, no hi viz, no fuck all

  10. Red is first as they are turning left. Purple car must wait and observe red cars’ intentions (i.e. indicators) before the purple car attempts to turn right.

  11. I know for a fact it’s red car because I failed my driving test over being purple car in this exact scenario with traffic lights hahah instant grade 3

  12. In Ireland the red car is legally obliged to flash the blue car twice and then using his highest hand on the wheel make a very vague gesture to indicate he’s letting the other car go across. Minimal eye contact is recommended

Also nobody is allowed beep. Ever.
