They’re retired boys bach let them chill, give jobs to the unemployed. Calling people back to work because they cannot afford to live on state pensions just tells us that the state pension doesn’t pay enough.
B&Q have been hiring retired or semi-retired tradies for many years, and it’s a pretty good approach. My old man (an ex-spark) worked there for a bit not because of financial reasons, but just because he found the free time on his own with nothing to do a bit boring – he left when my mum retired with him so they had time together.
The employer gets a level of product knowledge and experience that they just don’t get in typical retail staff, and customers get a better experience.
Now, how many ex-mechanics would see themselves working at Halfords is another question, but it’s not a bad approach for any retailer looking for more knowledgeable staff.
Don’t see a problem with this
I can see myself working after retirement. Theres only so much time you can fill
I think this is quite a clever idea. They’re after the ‘quiet quitters’. I’ll bet they have some range of hours on offer, 3-5 days p/week. Trying to tempt ppl who are probably reasonably well off (but bored) back into productive work.
Imagine coming out of retirement only to then potentially spend your last day on earth working at Halfords! After a long career or a lifetime of hard graft, surely you’d fill your time with study or a passion project or doing hobbies not working in some random shop in a random retail park.
If any retiree is doing this simply for the extra money then that’s a sad indictment on the state pension (and maybe an element of poor planning on their behlf).
Yeah and how many will be let go when Xmas is finished.
