Overtime ban is gonna fuck more things up than anything else.
Still think they should have gone all out for the shutdown totally fucked it with strikes days and overtime ban.
Do believe the overtime ban should start exactly 2 weeks from today and last until it’s sorted like.

Up the workers but damn, hours after I booked time in London for work on the 14th.
Can anyone tell me if train routes to airports from central London have been completely cancelled on affected days on previous strikes?
These strikes seem destructive to everybody – the rail companies, the workers who have less money coming in and the customer.
4 full days in December and no overtime from Dec 18-Jan 2 is a lot of money for people to lose over Xmas.
Of course, once again, it’s the day I’m going to be trying to get to Gatwick on the train. Just give them a damn raise already, they’ve more than earned it.
Cheers for the heads up, cancelling the work Christmas party now. Sad, but it’s a necessary evil for workers rights.
Despite ruining Christmas travel plans, blocking medical appointments, cancelling work meetings, etc for the general public, I don’t expect this thread to look much like the ones discussing climate protestors.
Here before the 1 brain cell dimwits have a go at train drivers; this is not related to them.
Even though this is going to potentially fuck allllll of my plans to visit family for Christmas (tend to go in January to miss the “rush” and to ensure I get the leave I need) I still completely support this.
But seriously, just give them the pay increases already! They bloody well deserve it!
What exactly is stopping the rail companies from just imposing all the changes they want to make in order to save money? I mean they’re already striking anyway…
Good on em, striking at quiet times is no good, hit them where it hurts.
Please do it on my Christmas party day so I don’t have to go in
Probably 40% of the trains I’ve been on this year (which is maybe about 10 total) I’ve ended up getting full refunds, plus one partial refund, since they’re constantly delayed.
I can understand the need for higher wages, especially now with prices going up. But hopefully this wouldn’t mean higher priced tickets – they’re already overpriced! Especially for poor quality service a lot of the time (delays, cancellations, few carriages, overcrowded and having to stand for 1-3hrs…).
Getting a train up to my sisters ranged from £55/75 average, up to £180 (this included the good old bus replacement part way too). If it was £180 I had to pay, I’d have been better off getting the train to Gatwick (£17ish), flying up to Manchester via another country (£35-65), and getting the train down from Manchester (£15ish) to hers, rather than the direct train with a change or two… I don’t get why the tickets are so expensive and vary in price so much. They should be fixed prices based on distance.
There giving it quite a bit of a lead time compared to the last announcements (I think they have to give 7 days), so I suspect there is some hope by RMT that they can force a deal, and this doesn’t actually happen. They were sounding optimistic only a week or so back.
Argh that’s turned a 8 hour train into a 12 hour drive thanks lads!
I’m quite enjoying these strikes- my wife has excuses to not go to the office every time they happen which makes me happy!
I’m going to switch to coaches for long-distance travel from now on whilst there’s an active strike mandate affecting the trains – being burnt by so many strikes make that logical for me, but it’s certainly not in the interests of the railway workers.
Good on them! Full support to the strikers! Companies can’t just push people around in the middle of a cost of living crisis!
My sympathy is becoming limited, in part because the strikes aren’t achieving anything for workers at this time so I feel frustrated that the unions won’t try different tactics which may be more effective in achieving their aims. The government would literally rather pass legislation to hamper strike action than encourage rail companies to accept the proposed contracts laid out by striking rail employees’ unions – I can’t envision that more strikes alone will therefore solve the dispute.
But also, my sympathy is waning because I spend my work week in London and I’m repeatedly being prevented either from getting home to my family at weekends or getting to work. I’ve had to cancel trips and events repeatedly over the last few months. I can’t book tickets in advance because timetables aren’t being fixed in advance which means tickets are even more expensive at a time when my wage – which is significantly less than theirs – is already strained. It’s fatiguing and lonely to have your sole means of long-distance travel to your family and partner endlessly disrupted for little good justification. If this long-term strike programme had achieved anything I would be able to suck it up to an extent. But it hasn’t achieved anything besides harming the vulnerable public and unions would probably benefit from exploring other strategies in light of the strikes’ failure.
**Edit: please stop sending me messages threatening to rape me, injure me, kill me, enslave me, etc.**
**Edit for everyone demanding I come up with alternatives for RMT:** Industrial action strategy is an expert analyst area and I’m not a union strategist, nor do I work for DfT or Network Rail, so I couldn’t reliably propose a tactic that would have a known high likelihood of success. I don’t have enough information to model one. All I am able to identify is that despite the ongoing pattern of extremely high-impact, high-disruption, large-scale strikes from the unions, there has been no improvement in stakeholder relations or a pay offer that the union leaders will accept. In fact, the government has responded by instead developing legislation which will hamper the impact strikes by requiring minimum service during strikes. That all strongly suggests that this type of industrial action isn’t effective in this climate, and that alternative tactics should be explored by union strategists to improve the potential for resolution via companies accepting their proposals.
It will mess my Christmas travel but totally support it
Ah bugger I’m supposed to be travelling from Brighton to Yorkshire on the 16th, got my ticket already. Anyone know what the deal is in this situation – can I just request a refund?
Serious question, where can I find out details of what journeys are affected? I’m travelling from Birmingham to Newcastle on 13th December and return journey the next day, and I really don’t fancy getting stranded or delayed on what is a 4hr train journey 😭
There comes a point where people just can’t “redirect their anger” anymore. This whole comment section is proof of that. Even the comments which support the strikes in favour of workers are getting downvoted, which wouldn’t have been the case 6 months ago.
Getting pretty annoying now. Good job the Xmas do’s I’ve got planned are on Mondays!
It’s about time the railways were renationalised. Core infrastructure in the hands of corporations yields greed, shoddy service and extorting the public. Electricity, gas, railways, royal mail just to name a few.
And my wife arrives in the country for the first time since covid after we’ve waited 2 and a half years for covid, marriage and visa, in the 13th December.
Fuck sake.
Striking on a weekend will mostly harm other workers who spent the whole week grafting and just want to see their family at Christmas, not businesses or governments.
I think we should support the railway workers with a wider strike, but insist it’s done during the week.
This would achieve solidarity and stop costing workers their rest time.
I don’t suppose those rail replacement bus drivers are treated any better than the train drivers anyway, so we are just shifting the problem.
My trip from London to Edinburgh the other day was an absolute mess- not because of strikes but because they’re running services on barebones staffing so there’s no margin at all. So one cancellation leads to another as trains and staff end up in the wrong place. And the staff take all the flak. Manager I spoke to was obviously absolutely over it, and happily told me that it was basically that they’re totally dependent on overtime just to get the basics done.
So as ever it’s not just about money, it’s about working practices and conditions and these things all help the customer as much as they help the staff. Public transport is a critical national service and needs to be run that way, for everyone’s sake.
When will the government realise that Mick Lynch does not give a fuck if he drives the country into the ground, he’s not going to give up until he gets 100% of his demands. This is what happens when an immovable object comes up against an unstoppable force. Southern were on strike for *years* and now it’s going to be the whole country like it.
RMT must have a contingency fund larger than the GDP of some countries.
Because the previous strikes have clearly worked so well, that’s why you’re planning more, right? Fucking over the public just makes you a dick
Fuck sake. I rarely use trains or travel anywhere. The dates in December and January are the two fucking times I need to travel by train. And the last time I had to was around june/July…also with fucking strikes.
Can we just fucking pay them properly already
No problem with them campaigning for their rights but I’m sick of it coming at the expense of the rest of us.
Do they look at my travel plans then decide to strike on the days most damaging to me? SETTLE IT EARLIER THIS TIME PLEASE
