MPs can claim Christmas parties on expenses for first time

  1. We’re all here wondering if we can justify putting the Christmas lights on this year while MP’s and their staff are actively updating policies/guidance so that they definitely can, because we’re all paying for it.

And they wonder why the general population think politics in this country is a joke.

  2. And we al know they’re going to take the piss and milk it. No budget sausage rolls from Tesco. If it’s the tax payer covering it, they’ll be going as high brand as possible.

  3. They’ve gotten way *way* too comfortable with being in power. When the general election comes, the whole country needs to make sure they don’t have a single seat in parliament ever again.

  4. See when we do a Christmas party for 25 staff we get £500 or so budget, or £20 a head give or take.

I’m sure they will somehow manage to run up the bill into the tens of thousands

  5. You can’t make it up.

I’m not gonna say to bin the lot of them, because my MP is actually good, but fuck me, the system needs Ctrl+Alt+Del

  6. I’m sure the Gov’t will Party hard on the decks of HMAS Torytanic as it lists heavily to the Right while sailing in circles in a choppy cold grey shark ridden sea..

A General Election for Christmas, sure would be nice.

  7. I’m deplored by the policies and the executions of this government. A financial crisis they made, and the poor and middle incomes pays for.

But to be fair to mps and some of them and their lack of spine to call in a general elections.

Businesses and tax man allows for Christmas as a write off, so it’s not that big a deal for me granted it’s a yearly expense..
This feels like a distraction of the media of what’s going down in government.. has the home office gone FUBAR? What happened to the trade deal with India? What’s to be done to grow the economy?

  8. Lmao nothing says politicians like claiming for parties in a cost of living crisis.

I’m not even shocked anymore. Be interesting to see who on which side of the house has the balls to actually do it

Mogg will that’s a given but would a labour mp dare?

  9. At this point it just seems they’re trying to make people angry. Rishi alone could probably afford to do a fancy party for literally the whole house of Parliament.

In the end the reason we pay them so damn much is so they don’t need to make these ridiculous claims. They can afford to pay for it themselves even before taking into account their own finances. If they want to take from the tax payer so much how about they pay some more themselves. How about while you’re elected as an MP all non-goverment sources of income are taxed by 95%. Then they’d still be earning thrice the average wage and be making these claims.

    It’s just bloody madness.

  10. As much as I hate the tories is this actually their doing ? Seems they have MPs from the three largest parties denouncing it in the article. Is it not an independent watchdog?

  11. Places of work often put on parties for their staff. Given an MP hires staff and has volunteers canvassing for them, why wouldn’t they put on a christmas party for them in their constituency office or wherever.

I mean.. don’t get me wrong, there’s a million things that I think MP’s are taking the piss over and given that this is public money, we should be able to see EXACTLY what they claim, but how about we don’t just jump on the bandwagon immediately.

  12. They always shout “the people deciding this are independent”, as with MPs pay. That doesn’t mean what they decide is correct. Or justifiable.

  13. They weren’t already? That honestly unusual.

As a business you get a per-employee budget for Christmas parties, presents, etc. Anything above that is counted as benefit in kind

MPs run like a business with staff, etc. There’s plenty to complain about with expenses but as long as there’s a sensible cap this isn’t one of them.

Meanwhile MPs have to use a special line from BT as their internet provider which is 2-3x normal rate, and they have to use a specific security company (Chubb) when getting an alarm installed who do an absolutely shit job.

Be pissed about that, not MPs throwing parties for their staff who are, as a reminder, normal people like you and I.

  14. Thank you for and congratulations on screwing the country and it’s citizens for another year. Job well done. Have a jolly good knees up on us! Cheers!

  15. To be fair, if you read the article, several MPs on both sides of the house have pointed out that they never asked for this, nor have they any intention of taking them up on the offer.

Before we all get our pitchforks out, it’s quite possible that this was put together by someone in Whitehall who thought that they were doing people a favour, without considering the optics. It would be a little bit like announcing that, from tomorrow, it would be legal to shoot one dog in public per day, per household. Just because you are allowed to do something, doesn’t mean that you should…or indeed should take the flak for being allowed to do it.

Plenty of reasons to be annoyed / frustrated / angry with our political class, but I don’t think this is one of them.

  16. 80k or so MP wage.

About double for ministerial positions I think.

    Offices and staff on expenses.

    Second homes on expenses.

And now they can get more tax money to pay for an Xmas party?

Meanwhile, low paid working people on Universal Credit are going to be dragged into the Job Centre and asked by Job Coaches why they’re not working more hours and paying more tax so the MPs can have more money to spend on Christmas Parties etc.

    Tory Britain in 2022.

They see us as cows to milk for tax cash to find their lifestyles.

  17. I’m genuinely beginning to wonder if they sit in the house of commons absolutely pissing themselves, looking at each other saying “I dare you to try and claim for xyz”. They are taking the piss.

We are entering a very scary time in this country. We essentially have a two tory party system now with nobody in the house looking out for the working class.

  18. What a joke! This country is a disgrace. People out here (including me) that can barely afford to live, and MPs get their parties paid for! I’m on my last will now, honestly don’t think I can take much more than this, my mental health is destroying me from the inside out

  19. Time to play a fun game of “who didn’t RTFA before commenting”.

    Hint:

    > The advice from the expenses watchdog came in response to frequently asked questions on how MPs and their staff can celebrate Christmas…

    > according to **guidance from the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA)**..

    > a number of MPs have rejected the ruling as “universally unwelcome”…

    > Labour MP Jess Philips said “no-one asked for this, no-one I know will use it”, adding it was “really irresponsible” of IPSA to publish the guidance “as if MPs have been clamouring for it when I’ve literally never heard anyone do that”.

    > She tweeted: “I will throw a Christmas party for my staff, it will be in my home where I will cook and pay for all of the food and drink. Once again I reiterate that there was no clamour for this from MPs and it’s stupid.”…

    > Another Labour MP, Chris Bryant, added: “I don’t know of a single MP who asked for this or intends to use it. It is totally inappropriate and I shall certainly not be taking it up.”

    > And the SNP’s Stewart McDonald called it an “absurd” ruling from IPSA, calling on the body to reverse the “universally unwelcome” advice.

    > Speaking on TalkTV, senior Tory backbencher David Davis said the watchdog had “missed the mood of the age” and the advice was “bonkers”.

  20. This country sure has a penchant for taking it up the arse and asking for more

But hey in a world where all things are forgiven for collecting stars in a jungle, its no wonder they get away with this.

  21. Good. Can they also raise some more tax for working people please. I’m sure they’re used to paying everything in tax. At the same time give people on doll some pay rise too. They’ve worked hard and have earned it.
