East Wall residents’ group block Dublin’s Port Tunnel over asylum seeker accommodation

  1. I’d say little are actually local residents. Likely a decent mix of racist pricks, ignorant clowns lead astray, and more racist blow ins.

They’ve more to fear from the home bred local vermin.

  2. The thing I find funny is that the type of people at this protest, are exactly the type that’s been giving out about the ‘just stop oil’ protesters blocking roads in the UK.

  3. The thing about protests is that some are more effective than others. Like you can stand outside Leinster House with a placard and hardly nobody will take any interest in you and neither would the government but if you actually shut down areas like this you can get your cause listened to and noticed more.

It can bring the city to a standstill but you also might draw the frustration of people going about their everyday business so then you might have people in power pit people against the people protesting to take the wind of of their sails.

  4. They’re edging towards a Trucker’s Convoy, another idea inherited by right-wing populists. They’re gonna have to start clearing these fuckers out soon at this rate.

No surprise they aren’t at work.

  5. These are the same right wing gobshites that marched through the Port Tunnel to protest vaccinations like a year ago. Calling them ‘residents’ gives the core of these lunatics legitimacy that they don’t deserve.

They want attention and this particular episode is a reminder of what they did before.

  6. I think it’s important to just post u/SeaTeacher5781 comment anytime these threads are put up.

Irish people as a whole are very empathetic and our own history plays a part in that. However, it’s glaringly obvious that the vast majority of people coming in through our asylum process are economic migrants. When you dress it up as people who are desperately escaping starvation or being massacred, then just happening, as part of their desperate escape, to hop on a plane to a country thousands and thousands of miles away, you take everyone for fools. That isn’t an act of desperation, that is a deliberate choice to seek out a particular country.

Secondly, the largest contingents of people come from Albania, Georgia, Nigeria, Algeria etc. All countries that are for all intents and purposes, safe.

Thirdly, 40% of the people arriving are destroying their passports en route to immigration. I’m sorry but this is dodgy as fuck. Can these people even be deported if we wanted to? Answer me that.

Fourthly, we have a very high rate of refusal when it comes to asylum claims, yet we have practically zero deportations. Once someone is here, and it is decided that their claim is frivolous, they end up staying anyway. So once they’re in the door, they’re here forever.

Now, when you take all the bullshit emotive arguments out of this, what it boils down to is whether you are for or against completely open immigration policies. Some people are for, and some are against. Why is it that anyone who is against this policy is completely demonised and called racist? What is the logic there? Because some of the people immigrating through the asylum process are a different colour? Fuck off. There are plenty of ways to legitimately immigrate to Ireland.

Immigration in this manner is only going to increase in the future. It’s well over 10k this year, and this is likely to rise exponentially. Again, if you’re for this, then fine, that’s your prerogative. But again, I have to ask why you’re demonising anyone who isn’t for this? Is your argument that weak? Can it not stand on its own merits? Why do we want completely open immigration that’s accepting of absolutely anyone? Sell it to us. I’m more than happy to change my opinion and I’m all ears.

I would imagine if we were to have a vote on this tomorrow it’s extremely likely that a majority would vote to limit economic migration in this manner, with a view to tightening up our processes and deporting failed asylum seekers immediately. This would include returning those who destroy their travel documents to the country they came to us from, immediately. I would bet my house on this being the case. To think that other people see this madness that’s going on and agree with your hyper-liberal approach of “everyone welcome no matter what” just proves the bubble you exist within.

In closing, the reason this reaches a crisis point in places like East Wall, is you’re taking an area with lots of issues and generational poverty, and dumping a load of additional stresses into it. People don’t want hundreds of single men from various differing cultures who will have nothing to do all day living beside them. Full stop.

These men also represent a threat to those at the bottom of society who are already fighting for scraps, because these men (they’re objectively pretty much all men) will also be fighting for the same scraps. This comes down to local services, accommodation, and eventually employment, among other things. It’s fucking astonishing to me that the left wing, supporters of the so-called working classes, would do so much to keep wages and working standards suppressed by ensuring a continuous stream of low-skilled and low paid workers to saturate demand.

Put them in Donnybrook and Blackrock instead and fast-track them to become teachers, business executives and solicitors. Let’s fucking see how quick the tune changes in the opinion pages of the Irish Times.

Looking at other European countries, we know this will all end up in ghettoisation and increased serious crime, too. That’s a simple fact. There’s no avoiding it. We’re not going to do anything different than someone like Sweden, who were best in class, and still ended up with neighbourhoods of people with no prospects who would gladly burn the place to the ground because someone threatened to burn a Koran.

And I’m absolutely pro-Ukrainian and pro refugee. I’m simply pointing out the glaringly obvious holes in this bullshit “anyone who says anything bad about immigration is an evil racist” argument.

  7. Boils my piss that workers who pay taxes are being blocked. None of this softly softly from the guards please.

  8. Proportionally huge numbers of Irish people have immigrated across the world for centuries. We were driven out by colonisation and economic punishment, and (in recent decades at least) we’ve been welcomed into our new countries with open arms. It’s a bit fucking rich that any of us could turn away people who are very clearly in dire need of help.

  9. “Not fit for purpose” . Hilarious when these knuckle-dragging racist cunts pretend they’re concerned for the living conditions of the residents. Scum.

  10. Don’t be lookin down on people that decide to protest for whatever reason.

It’s a fundamental right, regardless of the cause. It’s unfortunate that a large volume of them are racists and dopes, but if you feel changes in your area will be detrimental to your area, get the fuck out and protest.

There’ll always be people who agree and disagree but sure that’s part of it.

Irish are renowned for rolling over and being told what to do, and no wonder reading the comments

  11. I hope the gardai are passing out fines to these scumbags. I seem to remember when the truckers against fuel protest shut down the docks and had to call off their protest due to being fined.

  12. A lot of these comments here are coming off a bit out of touch and classist. Don’t have to agree with these groups but just insulting people on social benefits in these communities isn’t really a good argument or look….

  13. Racist scum, deport them and make room for decent people from other nations. I would much prefer a country of ethnic diversity and no right wing racists

  14. They get called vermin because it means their points don’t have to be engaged. Dublin is a shithole. There’s no reason for property to cost as much as it does except as a racket for landlords and property owners. As much as the government is the real enemy they have every right to protest. And if it embarrasses the authority all the better.

  15. on one hand I understand why they are a bit upset as that building was earmarked for local social housing, but instead is being used to house refugees, on the other this is bad behavior and is a pain in the ass for anyone going to work

  16. Not that I agree with blocking tunnels, the amount of hate from the comments towards these people is shocking. Sure some are racist douches but I’m sure some are just concerned about the hugh amounts of population surge. I don’t think it’s a problem to discuss immigration. I just hate when sinks into calling people racist or xenophobic for having a conversation.
