  3. The owner of that dog shares as much blame as the dog itself. The amount of clowns walking around with dogs off leash is ridiculous.

    They say oh he’s friendly, he only has to be unfriendly once to ruin someone’s life. Hope that kid recovers

  4. As soon as I read dog attack, I just knew it would be followed by pitbull. We should ban pitbull breeding, let this generation die off naturally and be done with it.

  5. JFC, that poor child. So many people walking their dogs off the leash thinking “ah sure my little Rover wouldn’t hurt a fly”. Fuck that. Keep your dog on a leash.

  8. The issue with restricted breeds list is that it is almost like a advertisement for these breeds for scumbags who want to look tough. These are the last people that you want to be in control of any animal, never mind incredibly strong dogs who can do damage and require proper training and socialisation. Instead these want a dog that is a that is dangerous, they are often abused and neglected as well, making it a recipe for disaster.

    The other side of it is people who love their dog, but believe that their dog wouldn’t hurt a fly and therefore won’t take precautions such as having them wear a muzzle. Maybe they wouldn’t, but realistically when these dogs go, they can cause serious damage and even kill people. No matter how slight the chance of this happening, if you are going to own one of these breeds, it’s your job to ensure it doesn’t.

    An awful lot of this comes down to neglect and abuse, everyone wanted a dog during CoViD, the shelters are now bursting at the seams again and horrendous cases are coming through the door. Until we start to take neglect and abuse seriously, properly prosecute people and as a nation stop treating animals like toys and accessories, I fear we have a lot more of this coming.

    Thoughts are with the poor little lad and his family. This shouldn’t have happened.

  11. I think a lot of people don’t understand what specifically makes pit bulls so dangerous.

    They are animals with a terrier mindset and characteristics not unlike a Jack Russell but have the power of a far larger dog like a German Shepard or Rottweiler.

    This is what makes them so dangerous, larger breeds tend to be more defensive when they attack and do not attack to kill.

    If you have ever seen any terrier Jack Russel, or Fox Terrier or even Yorkshire catch a mouse or rat you will see how they shake them to death instinctively that is what terriers are bred for.

    So when you have that breeding mindset in an animal which has the power of far larger breeds it is the reason they are intrinsically dangerous.

    The owner does not teach a Jack Russel how to kill a rat they do it instinctively they have been bred to do it for hundreds of years to think a good owner can totally train out the instincts is naive.

    Psyoped by FB memes (“it’s not the breed it’s the owner”) into thinking a killing machine should be allowed around children/society as a whole.

    If you’ve ever seen a pit attack you’ll know that they have no self preservation or fear. Once they latch on it’s over, you can literally kick them half to death and they won’t let go.

  14. if the rules regarding pitbulls (and other restricted breeds) were enforced and backed by appropriate penalties for non-compliance i would have no issue with the breed of dog. As the rules are never enforced and the penalties are meaningless i would happily support the banning of them totally.

  17. Lived in a gaff for about 4 years where the neighbour had a pitbull. The dog was always super friendly and never was much bother.

    Until one day it just went nuts literally for no reason the way it didn’t kill me was I was 24 and had the fitness level to jump and pull myself up onto a 10 foot wall and even then the dog was running and trying to jump at me. If it was a child or an older person they would be dead.

    The dog went on a rampage and went down the fields after a local farmers sheep. Said farmer shot him. A sad ending but it had to happen.

  18. That poor poor boy, I’ve been thinking about him since I heard this, it’s horrifying and if he recovers from his physical injuries, the psychological injuries will likely remain.
    I tear up thinking of what that little child endured, those owners deserve harsh punishment.

  19. After being chased and attacked by a bunch of dogs in my local area while walking my own dog. I’ve had so much grief from other dog “owners” who dogs are uncontrolled and come at me and mine. There’s rarely an apology from just letting their dog run around, its always my fault if I have to scare them away and I get pissed at them.

    I’ve been told at least twice they were going to shove “that stick up your hole”.

  20. As somebody who moved to Enniscorthy recently I have to say dog warden is non existent. Ontop of there is alot of irresponsible dog owners in this town. I have on several occasions had pitfalls charge me in the middle of the street while walking my little dog and daughter.

    I’m just lucky at this stage but I’ve started carrying a knife or a big stick when I walk around. Not out of fear of scumbags but fear of their uncontrolled dogs wandering the street.

  21. Got bitten recently myself and decided to notify the city dog warden which I discovered Cork City Council have outsourced to CSPCA. No response, nothing two dangerous dogs and a neighbouring dog which joins them next to a school and they don’t give two shits.

  22. We have a constant problem where I live with vicious dogs. I have a small dog and find myself driving elsewhere to walk him safely .

    I’m totally frustrated by this. One house has two Alsatians – you can’t walk past their on the other side of the road alone . Let alone with a small dog

  25. Pit bulls kill more than half of all children killed by a dog attack in the US. Considering the number of breed there are, that is staggering. I have read a crap load of research because I walk dogs at the shelter and I didn’t want to be afraid. What I got out of that is animal behavioralists say a pointer is bred to point and has a natural desire to do so, a retriever retrieves, etc. a pit Bull has been bred to fight, and is extremely good at it. So an owner must be aware of this and cautious at all times. Their aggression is actually worse with other dogs than people. So a cavalier just be nice’ attitude isn’t sufficient. All the pits I walked, except for one, were very nice dogs.

  26. People who say it’s not the dog, it’s the owner are like people who say it’s not the gun, it’s the shooter. Sure there are people to blame but there’s no shootings where there are no guns. What humans have done to create modern pitbulls is disgusting and the decent thing to do would be to ban breeding them going forward and allow them to die out as a breed

  27. We have had this same problem here in the States for years, it continues to get worse because so many here own Pitbulls. There are so many wonderful and highly intelligent breeds, I don’t get why so many want to own them.

  28. One of the most infuriating thing I ever came across on ig was a young girl sharing her story about having a pitbull launch itself in her and attack her face. She lost her top lip from the attack…

    And then you have an overwhelming number of actual morons complaining about her use of “pitbull” in her post and why couldn’t she just say “dog” because all dogs are capable of attacking. And saying people like her are the ones that give “pitties” a bad reputation that they don’t deserve. GIVE ME A BREAK.

  29. I live local to this and I believe the victim was of Romani decent. That has just made the local racists and pitbull-apologists come out of the woodwork. Absolutely sickening. Fuck those people. How can that be your only thoughts at this time?

    Apparently the owner has done a runner. There’s videos of the owner actively tormenting the dog with toys and rope so the dog was fit to kill either way. They’ve been mostly removed from facebook but are circulating

  32. Recently someone asked me what I cannot tolerate. I said some shite I don’t even remember now. What I really cannot tolerate is owners of pitbulls who do not treat their dog as the unexploded grenade it actually is. It might never explode, if the pin stays in, but God help whoever is close if it does one day, and pins have been known to fall out with no warning.

  34. Ban these dogs, they should be illegal. And heavy prosecutions for anyone who owns, breeds, sells, or otherwise has anything to do with them. Far too many of these horrific attacks going on. And yet owners of pittbulls and similar breeds will insist that their dog is different, that their dog is good with kids. It’s horrendous what these families are having to deal with, and it simply is not worth the risk to keep a dog like this. Mass culling is the only way.
