Very sad. I think there’s a misconception out there with some people that a little bit of alcohol won’t harm the foetus. People having a small glass of wine to celebrate an occasion or the likes. A new public health campaign is warranted.
Tragically it’s not just alcohol, tobacco and narcotics also have a devastating impact on the development of a baby in the womb.
It would be nice to see a campaign for women about child development in the womb. We had Ireland talking about menopause, why not this.
That is depressing.
People don’t realise how truly devastating FAS is. They can have severe problems with memory, attention and language. They have a high comorbidity with autism, they’re more likely to have dementia. They have problems with their eyesight, they have heart and kidney issues. The list goes on
That is shockingly high, alas.
That’s shocking! I wouldn’t think it would be that high how sad
Its a terrible statistic, but also not very shocking? We have large communities who are uneducated on the matter or simply do not care, all while being surrounded by drink and drugs.
A tenth??? Holy shit
I remember a rather controversial guy saying people who have kids should need a license, after all having kids is the most important thing a person will ever be responsible for.
https://www.fasdhub.org.au/fasd-information/assessment-and-diagnosis/guide-to-diagnosis/. Australia and Canada have diagnostic guidelines. I’m not sure why the article says there are none. A lot more can be done to support these children and their families. People think that this only affects children born to those with alcohol dependency but that is not true. Elizabeth Russell is a fasd advocate, she campaigned for years for it to be recognised as a disability. Amazing woman.
I’d well believe it. There seems to be a lot of ignorance around how alcohol affects the health of sperm, fertility and conception too.
I remember working in a fine dining restaurant. A heavily pregnant woman kept on asking for a wine top up. I refused to serve her.
My point being, its not just lower class women do this. There’s a lot of people abusing alcohol these days.
Just drive through Dublin, not hard to see the evidence anywhere you go.
What kind of scumbag would do that to their child.
Those scumbags should be sterilised.
Alcohol, tobacco, drugs.
Think twice before bringing in someone who may suffer because of YOUR choices.
I’ll never forget when a Portuguese taxi driver told me that having a child is the most selfish thing a person can do. The child never asked to be born, so the very least you owe to the child is everything. It really stuck with me
I’m not sure as to what exactly foetal alcohol syndrome disorder entails. Outside of severe FASD (the kind that permanently affects the child), what long term side affects are there of being diagnosed with it? Like if 10% of children born have this, then surely 10% of our young population have it and are at a disadvantage health-wise already.
I wonder how many parents are being sat down and being told you caused this.
It’s 9/10 months out of your life you have to abstain, more realistically if you want to do it properly, is it really that hard?
Disgusting how some woman go on when they’re pregnant. Don’t deserve to have kids IMO.
I would imagine that it is now lower than years ago.
I remember my mother saying that everyone she knew that was pregnant continued to drink and smoke because they didnt know any better.
If you stand outside any maternity hospital you will see loads of women who are basically in labour, chalking down fags. You will see a few hanging around who look off their face on junk or drink. I’m surprised it is not a higher number to be honest.
Most of them don’t care and will happily impact their future childs existance for themselves. They stand no chance anyway.
That explains the 10% of the country who love Nathan Carter
Holy sh*t, that seems shockingly high.
Poor kids, disadvantaged before they’re even born!
Would explain some of the posters on this sub.
Legitimate public health disaster there
Doesn’t surprise me. While my partner was in hospital having a miscarriage and I was forced to wait outside I witnessed multiple pregnant women coming out to smoke and even saw one cretin having a few cheeky cans.
My dr told me to have a few glasses of wine, I was FREAKING out at my first appointment when I was 6 weeks pregnant as I had drank a 3 glasses of wine about 3 weeks prior just before my period was due. His exact words “the baby will be fine, sure girls come home from Ibiza after a summer of drink, find out they’re pregnant and the babies are fine. So don’t worry and if you want to have a glass or two of champagne at Christmas that’s fine.” I can still recall it 6 years later because I was like WTF is he saying? I knew not to but imagine getting that ‘permission’ if you didn’t know!
I think it’s also worth noting that Some of the symptoms are ‘mild’ but have a serious impact on a person’s life and if there’s anyway to avoid them we should do it, people always imagine worst case scenario when it comes to FAD but even slight changes to a person’s brain will profoundly alter their life’s path and people (or drs in my case) need to know that too. It’s not just about binging or alcoholism causing catastrophic damage, it’s casual drinking and minor brain damage that are a problem too.
Oh fuck, in 14-16 years they’re going to be roaming the night in huge feral gangs bringing violence, fear and misfortune to all in their path.
Not surprised, in Limerick Maternity Hospital you pass the Smoking Shelter where all the Mommies chain smoke away as a HSE recorded announcement about the dangers of smoking to their unborn Child plays through a little PA system on repeat.
They probably have vodka and cider in their bedside locker – Society offers some people everything, seemingly never having to deal with the consequences of their own shiity actions is another thing that they take for granted and you can be sure there Social Workers on hand to step in and deal with it afterwards…..
i had a friend in school nonchalantly tell our friend group that her mam drank and smoked through all three of her pregnancies, so this figure doesn’t surprise me
Local junky popped.out her 5/6th crotch goblin recently. Child was high as a fucking kite. Was in hospital for weeks weaning it off whatever shite she was putting up her snot. Amazingly they allowed her to bring the kid home. Now her and DOTY drive around in his van out if their brains with the child in the front seat playing happy families.
We as a culture need to take a good hard look at ourselves and have a serious conversation about what alcohol is actually doing to us. When I’m down in the dumps I get drunk because it makes me feel better than anything else can, but we have to look at our childhoods and see what alcohol did. Alcohol ruined the relationship I had with my parents, (which is primarily why I drink), and even though they are better, it will never be the same.
I was actually shocked to see pregnant women smoking outside Rotunda – I had to actually pinch myself to believe that is a reality and no one bans it esp right outside the maternity hospital
Makes so much sense when I was pregnant everyone kept telling me to just relax and to have a glass of Guinness it’s good for iron they said (Steak has far more iron than guiness). I took a few sips here and there throughout my pregnancy but never had a drink I knew so many women that would have drinks while pregnant.
CDC came.out that not even a single serving of alcohol is healthy for us adults, never mind a little baby that hasn’t even taken a breath of fresh air yet.
