Black Friday: Shoppers warned most offers are not cheaper

  1. Black Friday/Cyber Monday – why ia this shite even over here? We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving FFS!

It’s also been known for years to be a total scam from fake discounts (use a price pushed high at one store for a period as the original), through to lobotomised models just for the sales.

  2. Nothing new lol, this is going on for years now but people still think they got a great deal, because stores just like to give away their income.

  3. It’s a ridiculous notion that retailers are going to discount during their busiest period. This is the time of year you get rid of as much as your stock as you possible can at the highest price possible.

I get why they do it in the States, but that absolutely doesn’t apply over here and it’s just a gimmick.

  4. It’s a sad state of affairs when consumers need to be told they’re being ripped off. Why are people not doing basic research to save their money? Why are people so trusting of retailers? Every year this happens, yet it’s still the same story. It’s pretty dire.

  5. Seems like they’ve mainly focused on large gadgets, which is fair enough, as that’s the main draw, but I’d be interested to see the same thing done with other types of product aside from the obvious ‘big ticket Christmas items ’.

Over the past few years I’ve seen huge discounts on non-physical items such as subscriptions/software & apps etc, that almost certainly haven’t been available at any other time of the year. I get that it’s easier to discount non-physical items, but a valid discount is a valid discount.

Same with smaller physical items like toiletries – not electric toothbrushes though. Those fuckers are always ‘on sale’.

Also, it’s like the January sales – if you need a new bed, you may get lucky if you buy it at a random time, but buying on Black Friday probably ensures you’ll get it at *one* of its lowest price points, even if not the absolute lowest.

  6. I’m sure most people know this already, but for Amazon, check the price history on uk.camelcamelcamel.com to see if it’s a good deal or not

  7. One thing that is useful is any service or sub that has that discount. The same vpn you use for 70% off a 3 year deal is a good deal.

Use your head and do some research.

If it wasnt cheaper earlier in the year, its a crappy product they want to shift.

  8. It wouldn’t surprise me if the shop put the prices up two weeks before only to put them back down close to the original price.

  9. Anything advertized at “10% off” usually starts 20+% over standard price. This scam is going since Ugh sold pieces of mammoth to Bonk in the neighboring cave.

  10. To be fair, I’ve needed a new phone for a while and have held off buying the model I wanted for a good 6 months – just snapped it up at the lowest price I’ve seen it since release (and I know its the lowest price cuz I’ve been tracking it for 6 mos) thanks to Black Friday and still at a reasonable price for a brand new phone.

  11. I think articles like this are missing the point. Yes, we all know that the price listed in late November might not necessarily be the best price that ever was. That may have been back in June. But, it’s the best price in November/December when you’re actually doing your holiday shopping and that’s all that matters. Unless you somehow had mystical foresight that Fursuit Barbie was going to be on the top of little Sally’s wishlist all the way back in June.

  12. Something i’ve noticed on a LOT of tech items via camelcamelcamel, is that they all seem to be their cheapest late aug- mid sep, then have their prices shoot up, only to come down slightly for “Cyber Week”

  13. I just bought my wedding suit for £80, down from £230. Pretty happy with that saving lol

  14. I’ve had a holiday cancelled (thanks easyJet, twice in one year!), so I’ve been on Loveholidays for the past few weeks looking at options. The holidays I had earmarked are the exact same price, except there’s now a Black Friday tag on them saying it’s 15% cheaper (spoiler: it isn’t).

  15. Always has been a scam, like most sales.

Also, despite the name being “Black Friday” it seems to last for weeks on end.

  16. As ever with sales:

If you have been wanting/needing this item for some time, if you have done your research and are certain that it’s the right spec and quality, if you have been tracking the price and were waiting for the right opportunity, if you are sure that the sale price is actually a good/low price, then yes go ahead and buy it

If you had never considered buying this item at all until you saw the “sale” sign, then don’t buy it.

“Because it was on sale” is not a reason to buy something that you were not already prepared to buy. Because you have not saved money, you have spent money that you never intended to spend.

  17. So I used to work at one of the UK high street electrical stores, I used to be in the warehouse looking after the stock!

The first year I was there about 2-3 months before Christmas we got in a new laptop (just one, it was more usual to get 3-4 of each laptop in a delivery), as usual one of the sale guys came in looked at the laptop and said “that the boxing day special”.

I said how do you know and he said its way overpriced for the spec.

Sure enough the month before Christmas we got another 50 of the overpriced laptop and come Boxing it was the Xmas special offer!

This happened every year for the following 7 year I work there.

The magic has gone from sales, it just another excuse to sell more!

  18. My borther in Christ every single thing has gone up in price anywhere between 20% to 50% in the last year (heating, rent, food, etc) do you think I have the income to spend on some random discount TV or something?

I’m genuinely shocked that black Friday still exists after this year’s shitshow

  19. I’ve been watching the Samsung S8 ultra for ages.

First it came with a free £200 keyboard.

    Then it was £200 off.

    Then normal price.

Now it’s £200 off for Black Friday.

Back up for Christmas I’m sure.

And back down for New Year’s.

Same alterations at curry’s, argos and Samsung own website.

And Ofcourse the base model is mysteriously out of stock.
