Fresh fruit and veg prescribed to low-income families in UK trial

  1. I have a real fucking gear to grind with this nonsense no best-before dates on fruit / veg.

Firstly, this has nothing to do with supermarkets doing the ‘right’ thing. It’s about them maximising profits by not rotating stock as often.

If they REALLY gave a shit, they would just give fruit/veg away for free once it hit a certain date.

That way I’m not paying full price for broccoli that’s already on the turn, and people who need help can just take the stuff over it’s BBD, should they want/need to

I guess those poor supermarkets are struggling for profits now though, amirite?

  2. If taxes and energy bills weren’t so high (thanks to completely avoidable moves made by those incharge) maybe people wouldn’t need this kind of stupidity

  3. Turns out that people who eat healthily feel better. Who knew? A cynic would say that the Tories keep people poor because hungry people are weaker and less likely to fight back, however hungry people are also less productive and more likely to get sick. If the Tories really wanted the best workers in the world, they would do more to take care of them and fresh fruit and vegetables would be cheap and available to everyone.

  4. I’m absolutely all for people getting help with food when they categorically cannot afford it but I’m always confused when it comes to ‘healthy food being expensive’.

Bananas are about 14p each, apples you can get for 20p, carrots are literally dirt cheap as well as onions. Sweet potatoes are fairly cheap, nutritious and filling.

Then there’s tins of tomatoes, lentils and beans, which although have gone up in price are still good value.

I get it if you have picky kids, then it can be hard. And like I say if you categorically cannot afford any food then sure.

What we need is good food education in this country. People have almost 0 idea about nutrition.
