Joe Lycett reveals the truth behind David Beckham World Cup money shredding

  1. Yeah I thought this was kinda obvious to be fair – Lycett’s entire thing is comedy and helping people. I couldn’t really see him shredding £10k real cash instead of donating it to someone who needs it.

  2. I mean afaik he _could’ve_ shredded real money and taken it to the bank for fresh notes, right?

That aside he made a good example of a high quality protest.

Can he share his notes with the oil protestors though?

  3. Some absolute fucking chopper yesterday:
“yOu CoUlD hAvE fEd A fAmIlY fOr A yEaR wItH tHaT mOnEy”

Looking forward to everyone retracting their statements now that it’s been confirmed that he’d already donated the money.

Also, anyone pretending that media spectacles aren’t the absolute best way that raise awareness can get Tae fuck. Had no idea David Beckham had accepted ~~blood~~ Qatari money for an appearance to the tune of [£150m](https://www-mirror-co-uk.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/david-beckham-qatar-world-cup-28525203.amp?amp_gsa=1&amp_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16690368296929&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&ampshare=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mirror.co.uk%2Fsport%2Ffootball%2Fnews%2Fdavid-beckham-qatar-world-cup-28525203) without this would have never known.

  4. Britain will slide into a dictatorship before the public stop throwing their noses up at every single bit of protest. No matter how small. If that lassie jumped in front of the kings horse in 2022 it would be the woke left going too far again.

  5. Total legend.

He’s got everyone talking about it. You couldn’t buy close to that kind of publicity for £10k, and he has done so while still donating to a good cause and exposing Beckham’s hypocrisy.

And all those who objected in principle to money being destroyed will now have to backpedal a bit.

    Absolutely glorious

  6. I will say I am glad that this is the case, when I first heard about the stunt it did bother me with how needlessly performative and wasteful it would be.

I’m glad it got the notice he wanted, and. Glad the money went to a good cause

  7. Beckham has been a fucking corporate shill for over a decade now – he’s completely fake, everything at this point stinks of PR stunt except the ones he tries to hide. I just don’t believe anything that he says has an ounce of sincere emotion behind it sad to say even the videos with his children.

  8. I had a family member moaning about this. I definitely just chuckled, said nah he’s definitely donated, he’s just done it to piss of people like you.

    Lo and behold.

  9. You mean to say a crime wasn’t committed? Well I’m certainly shook by this revelation.

Do people not realise that destroying money is a crime?

  10. Of course it was bollocks and Beckham was never going to change anything or even give him any attention for it. Joe Lycett’s humour is all about made up stories, like his totally real emails he sends to companies full of witty remarks where they finally back down and he wins the joke.

  11. I love Joe and had a feeling it wouldnt be real money he shredded. But Beckam will have lost a lot of gay peoples respect now. I dislike him too as he has so much money, but decided he needs more. Just pure greediness

  12. Controversial but he should have shredded it in my opinion. He won’t be able to make similar threats again unless he demonstrated he meant it.

Campaigns cost a lot of money. £10k, in the interest of making the point he wanted to make, is not a lot.

  13. Amazing he got such the backlass he did. It was pretty obvious it wasnt real. I said yesterday i thought it was fake money. Seems it wasnt but still wasnt a real stunt

  14. I’m glad LYcett managed to make teh statement and support the charities. But I think his point would have been just as valid if he had shredded the money. It won’t offset the millions Qatar spent having Beckham endorse their homophobic regime.

  15. You had to be an idiot not to see this coming, such an easy out. Even if he did shred the 10K, just say it was prop money and you’re home free

  16. It was a great stunt. I hope Beckham has reflected on it and i hope it’s not the end of the negative publicity for people like him who have endorsed this

  17. Yeah I mean… this was kind of unsurprising. I wonder if the people who shrieked about him shredding money in a cost of living crisis will apologize? No? Maybe Not? Not likely? Thought not.

  18. Anyone thinking he did this with the legitimate intention of getting a reaction out of Beckham, or that it was actually real money, has to be so gullible it’s not even funny. Of course it was just to raise awareness and he was giving the money to charity anyway. The amount of people who were shocked is quite shocking.

  19. In 2020, Hancock did a far better job of destroying hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayers money by authorising purchase of PPE unfit for purpose. This is languishing in storage somewhere or polluting the planet. £10k is peanuts by comparison.

  20. To the surprise of no one. Good lad, even if he isn’t usually my cup of tea.
