Dashcam Cyclist Close Call from ireland

  1. From a few years ago but always look at it again when I come across it on the computer, as don’t know how the cyclist wasn’t clipped or at least thrown off or wobble with the air movement, and doesn’t seem like any of the cyclists check to look for approaching traffic.

    Few points to note :

    – Dashcam vehicle is 15ton+ bus.

    – Lane is narrower than other points as it’s at an area where there there’s three lanes being fitted in because of the turning lane, and the small hard shoulders each side.

    – With the car sitting in the turning lane, there’s no where really to go apart from swerving totally into the far oncoming lane, which may not be the best idea with a fully loaded bus in wet weather! Also, at the point where you’d have to make this decision and be able to do it successfully, the cyclist is still well back into the junction and it’s not fully obvious at this point that he would keep coming as he did.

    – With the lane width, I’d estimate the the bus probably would take up about 90-95% of the lane at that exact point so with him just straying across the line leaves a very minimal margin of error here for contact, never mind the wind disturbance.

    – I had seen them coming and the speed they were approaching the junction caught my attention but it’s just one of those ones you don’t expect them to come out like this, you think they’ll pull up at the stop sign, slow down and wait for traffic to pass or just keep well in as would normally happen.

Safe to say any more when approaching this section I take a little extra notice of anything coming from the side and if a car is in the turning lane!

  2. Damn he didn’t even seem to slow down at the line nevermind stop before joining the main road. I wonder did he even realise how close he came to killing himself..

  3. I would guess maybe their brakes failed to grip due to the rain, causing the close call.

The alternative explanation is that the cyclist was playing chicken with cars.

  4. Road bikes have shite rim brakes and mostly slick tyres. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were unable to actually stop which means they werent cycling with due care for the conditions.

  5. Yikes wtf was he thinking! See alot of comments about brakes failing but I highly doubt it brakes are designed for all weather conditions and if not working he wouldn’t have made it to where he is, just careless and silly from the cyclist if you are gonna use a main road with 60+ km/hr you make sure you are nowhere near the vehicles especially on a rainy day.

  6. Some of the comments in here makes me think some of you would actually have enjoyed seeing the cyclist get clipped.

The cyclist absolutely made a mistake here, no question. Not only did they make a mistake, I guarantee you they shat their pants and will never do something like that again. My guess would be they came down the incline too quick and were not cycling defensively given the very wet conditions. Also, they should all be stopping to merge correctly given the stop sign.

The driver of the bus here is driving defensively and does very well to spot the hazard and be prepared to adjust accordingly.

  7. Your fault for not knowing he was coming, your fault for not knowing he didn’t intend to stop, your fault for not knowing he is entitled to more of the road than you are, your fault for not knowing he has zero respect for those pesky rules of the road, your fault all road….all cyclists everywhere!

  8. All them lucozade brain cyclists complain about drivers. The whole world has to stop for them when they are hit.
