Those are the Sun and the Moon and the human figures are just an artistic license. Or folklore characters. there is a legend that the Sun follows the Moon to catch her and when they meet there is an eclipse. Or they are made for fun, or to give them a personality, like in many old drawings that give faces to the Sun and the Moon.
