Ursula von der Leyen compares Britain’s rule in Ireland to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

  1. Myb soviet rule in ukraine because of famines and treating non russians as second class citizens???

But really it’s sickening how politicians’ mouths are full of ukraine

  2. >“Today, another European nation is fighting for independence. Of course, Ireland is far away from the front line in Ukraine. But you understand better than most why this war matters so much to all of us.”

Dunno what’s controversial about that. It’s objective fact that we treated Ireland like shit, and they did have to fight for their freedom. Suck it up.

  3. She didn’t she compared Irelands fight for independence with Ukrainians fight against Russia. Which is a bit different from the headline.

A German criticising anyone for occupation of another country in post 1914 would obviously be a massive hypocrite.

  4. Anyone else cannot access whole article? Is it meant for Northern Ireland? Thx for explaination.

  5. Brits never gave back willingly anything they stole. And why would they? The mystery for me is that no matter how much they stole country ended up poorer than before. Maybe there should be a national conversation where all that money went?

  6. Wrong comparison. Russians invasion and occupation is completely illegal whereas Ireland being part of the United Kingdom until 1918 was completely legal and legitimate from a perspective of international law.

  7. Putting the finger pointing aside, it’s a really undiplomatic thing to say about an ally in the current conflict.
Especially when the UK was warning it was going to happen and the EU was In denial .
Isn’t this the same person that totally cocked up the EU coronavirus vaccine then picked a fight with the UK as a distraction?

  8. Absolutely. Big neighbour bullies smaller one, and for some bizarre reason, refuses to believe that smaller neighbour really does NOT consider itself to be just a part of bigger neighbour’s country

  9. I’m not surprised; for me it’s been a helpful comparison regarding language and identity. Half of my family is Russian-speaking Ukrainian who feel strongly Ukrainian, not Russian, despite the language. I’ve found it’s easier for the Anglosphere to understand the situation if you talk about English-speaking Irish citizens still feeling deeply Irish while working to revive their ancestral language.

  10. She is absolutely right.

UK invaded Ireland and never gave back NI.

    The potatoe famine.

The “terrorists” defenfind Donbass are similar to the terrorists dendrnding Ireland Union: IRA.

A couple of months ago a british guy was on the UkranianConflict telling me how bad i was for having an issue with Zelensky inviting Italian far right PM, and how Ukraine should get more weapons.

The discussion ended when i brought NI to the table.

“This case is different “, he said.
