Sunak tries to pacify Brexiters but keeps door open to closer EU ties

  1. This still means nothing concrete. Everyone has this and that idea, can we have something materialising though? Any sort of goddamn trade deal?

  2. From a [related article ](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2022/nov/21/brexit-rishi-sunak-swiss-deal-cbi-chief-uk-politics-live-latest-updates)

Not sure if he is delusional or not, but what he is saying is mostly a crock of shit. Surely he must realise that?

    > On trade, let me be unequivocal about this. Under my leadership, the United Kingdom will not pursue any relationship with Europe that relies on alignment with EU laws.

    > Now I voted for Brexit. I believe in Brexit and I know that Brexit can deliver, and is already delivering, enormous benefits and opportunities for the country – migration being an immediate one, where we have proper control of our borders and are able to have a conversation with our country about the type of migration that we want and need.

    > When it comes to trade, it means that we can open up our country to the world’s fastest growing markets. I’ve just got back from the G20 in Indonesia. We’re talking about signing CPTPP, where we’ve got some of the most exciting, fastest-growing economies in the world, and we can become a part of that trading bloc. That’s a fantastic opportunity for the UK.

    > Or indeed regulation … We need regulatory regimes that are fit for the future that ensure that this country can be leaders in those industries that are going to create the jobs and the growth of the future. And having the regulatory freedom to do that is an important opportunity of Brexit.

    > And that’s my agenda. And I’m confident that that agenda is not only right for the country, but can deliver enormous benefit for people up and down the UK in the years to come.

  3. CBI isn’t happy with Tory EU policy, so the paymasters of the Tory party are not happy.

I suspect this is the first small baby step towards, at some point in the future, the Tories floating the idea of joining the EEA or CU. Especially if they think they can out-flank Labour.

Labour under Starmer won’t say a word against Brexit (despite recent opinion polls) and he’s even trotting out nativist stuff, Tory policy basically. If Labour win power in 2024 (I’d be shocked if they didn’t – especially if we have a nasty recession) they’ll be tied into all of that stuff. The Tories meanwhile under pressure from big business will change their stance.

    Starmer needs to watch himself.

  4. Closer? Yes. Following EU rules? No.

This doesn’t seem to change anything for anyone. Both sides are in exactly the same place – the EU won’t be closer without the rule following and the UK won’t sign up to their rules.

  5. The front pages today jumped all over the slightest whiff of closer EU ties. Apparently any discussion apart from maintaining the absolute most hard Brexit possible is treason even though it was never even a part of the discussion until after the referendum. Just madness.

  6. Sunak always says ‘for the good of the party’ first thing out of his mouth and then ‘for the good of the people’ is second or third thing.

  7. Tories keep pushing that the most important thing to tackle is migrants crossing the channel. Ok…bow to the boomers. They’ll not be around much longer to vote you twats in.

  8. Can we stop having the whole country suffer so horribly for the sake of a handful of rich delusional whiners please

  9. Remember when a Norway/Swiss-style Brexit was considered during the initial referendum? Even the likes of Farage, Brexiteer in Chief himself, thought the idea of a hard Brexit was unthinkable. We have only lent hard on being so cut off from Europe now that we have actually gone through with that option, despite it being considered unthinkable when the referendum was first proposed. It’s ridiculous that closer ties with the EU is conflated with rejoining the EU when we can see the benefits other countries gain from such an arrangement. It’s like we are happy to shoot ourselves in the head every time closer EU ties are even dreamt of.

  10. Only when the last pub has been closed down, the last fish factory folded, and the last mind been poisoned, will we realize we cannot eat lies.

Cree Indian Prophecy on the ERG and Brexit. So wise.
