I managed to catch some of the Voice Greece recently for the first time. I’ve seen the US and UK versions of the show as well as well as, randomly, some of The Voice China.

I was absolutely blown away by the quality of singers. I’ve heard enough Greek pop music to know that Greeks know how to hold a tune, and some of the production in Greek pop is top class, but these guys just seem to be picked at random from the public by a panel of deaf people.

There is this bizarre entry with timing that is so bad that I’m not sure she can hear the backing track

Then this woman who decides at 1:40 she prefers Jazz Fusion and creates her own scales.

Keep in mind that this is the final stages. So these people actually beat several others who were, inconceivably, worse than them.

There were some moments of talent, but on the whole I really couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

How did a country that produced Demis Roussos, one of the greatest voices of his generation, also produce this?

  3. A big reason is the population of the country. Greece has a population of a bit more than 10 million, with the average age being one of the highest in the world so there are not that many potential singers.

    That means that the UK has 7 times the population of Greece, so at least 7 times more likely to produce good singers, the US has 33 times the population of Greece so even more likely to produce good singers etc.

    Another reason is the fact that most kids in Greece do not have the ‘luxury’ to get vocal lessons from a young age since they tend to be quite expensive, and that makes a huge difference in shows like The Voice where most participants tend to be younger.

    TLDR: smaller pool of candidates due to population, less experienced singers due to lack of resources for most families

  4. Because they want people who will attract viewership and not competent people.

    Which turns such shows into semi-comedies for many, so many competent people dont go because they dont want to be associated with a circus

    Long answer: There used to be like 3 different singing competition shows like the voice, airing simultaneously every season. And we are a small country so..

These shows have become completely irrelevant here the past 15 years to the point that it is surprising that the producers still make enough money to keep airing them, but I guess they have found a way to keep the cost as low as possible. No one talks about them and even If they do it is most likely because of a cheesy backstory rather than the contestant’s talent. Singers nowadays have much better chance of acquiring a fan base and thus start closing better deals if they join Big Brother or Survivor, so they won’t even bother to join The Voice or similar talent shows.

  8. There is little to no vocal training available in greece, and what there is isn’t designed around demanding vocals as they contrast traditionally popular greek tunes.

    Even with talent, it’s very hard to sing well. Not everyone can be Streisand.

  11. What’s worse was that the first 2 seasons were actually good, but then the Sky channel took the franchise and everything went wrong.

    Bad sound engineering, doubling the number of positions of stage 2 so that even the mediocre singers can pass the auditions, and not very good winner contracts made the professional singers not bothering to go. Yes the quality is not very high.

  12. My question too. This season in particular is very bad. I stopped really watching the show after the first 2 Seasons because the quality of voices started to drop. This is the 7th consecutive Season and let’s hope the last.

    Usually our music sounds like shit to me.

    In this case,It’s a reality,they usually are bad.

  14. Professional singers would never set their foot in a show like that anymore; there is just exposure with no real benefits.
    The deals offered to winners are ridiculous too.
