The cost of 1 months private psychiatric care in Ireland

  1. I’m very lucky to have had insurance (who still haven’t actually paid it over to the hospital but we don’t talk about the war), unfortunately I have people in my life who would’ve benefited greatly from this kind of care but had no chance of being able to pay for it out if pocket or their insurance didn’t cover it.

  2. “MeNtAl HeALtH iN iReLanD iS ImPoRtaNt”

its a joke there’s such a cost for getting the proper mental health in this country. not the first story i heard of people coming out with bills as if were in america…

I can tell you now, your nat in america now boi

  3. If someone with another life threatening illness like cancer had to deal with the likes of this then it would be on the front page of every newspaper in the country. It’s a fucking scandal.

  4. My friend got a fine in the door a few weeks after getting home from hospital after he tried to kill himself.

That evening he made sure he did.

  5. Last year I took out better health insurance for just this reason. I get good out patient health care. Psychiatrists are extremely expensive

  6. I remember a GP refered me to St Pats, had a call with a nurse for assessment and at the end she said grand we’ll be in touch in 6 months and if you wanna kill yourself go to A&E.

Six months roll around and heard nothing, got in contact with them and they said sorry we tried getting in touch with you a few weeks after you called to tell you we cant take you. I said I never got a call, they said they sent a letter to my gp, I said what GP, they listed some lad off from another side of the country. I said that’s not my GP I’m in Dublin and they said well sorry about that and hung up.

    Absolute joke of a system.

  7. I attempted, ended up in hospital. They medicated me and sent me on my way. This was months ago now and my mental health is still steadily declining with no support. I only attempted AFTER presenting myself to hospital begging for help, because I knew what would happen, i only presented to hospital AFTER going to my gp in an effort to get help before things escalated. Everyone says ask for help, but what help is there? I can’t afford private health care and am drowning. The system is fucked

  8. That shocking. Just wondering if anyone here ever had a go at betterhelp . com for counselling & any good or bad reviews?

  9. A fine? Why should anyone be fined for psychiatric help?

Outrageous with our taxation and government spending that this is happening.

So sorry about your friend, what a terrible tragedy. Hope you’re doing ok <3

  10. I was referred to a psychiatrist from my doctor, who looked at my file and said that the only medication left to try were antipsychotics and didn’t want to listen to my history at all. And antipsychotics could be good for all I know but the word sounded severe and irreversible so when he asked if I wanted to go on them I said now-despite everything I don’t feel like a lunatic yet. Also there was a trainee doctor present who asked to be there who asked to be there and I was too intimidated to say no. So I stuck with the meds I was oncymbalta and the last time I was at the doctor they just gave me something to sleep which was nice but not what I wanted after pouring out my misery. I call helplines and can feel the volunteer counting down the minutes till the call can end. There is nothing available for people in need except cheap SSRI’s,mindfulness, exercise and links to helplines. Everyone says that mental health is important have no experience of accessing it in this country. I am afraid of admitting I have anything because it will be noted as a weakness and locked away in hospital and on my case file forever. It’s a bad joke.

  11. The problem with public as well is you see so many doctors that arent up to speed on your own personal affliction. I must have seen about 40 different junior doctors who used just read my file for three minutes beforehand. Then when i had a hypomanic epsiode because of the antipressant i was on, i couldnt convince any of them that it was mania.

It is an absolute joke of a system. And they dont give a fuck. You have to walk naked up grafton street before they will diagnose you.

  12. Struggling reading everyone’s comments. I’m 33 and I do not see an improvement happening in mental health systems here during my lifetime. Sad really.

  13. I live in Germany and I never want to go back to Ireland for reasons like this. Unbelievable. The healthcare system is so shit and it’s hard to find a competent doctor, no offense to doctors.. that’s my experience of Ireland

  14. I always laugh when I see Americans commenting about getting therapy. It’s not hsut something you can go out and “get” here willy nilly.

I tried and it took months, only got it easily when I was in college.

  15. If you seek help just don’t mention any substance abuse at the start as it does seem like they are on commission to check those boxes to get people off the waiting list. Its self defeating but that’s the way it is, so many lives lost over it.

  16. In my experience, The state looks after youth mental health reasonably well, but as soon as you become an adult you’re on your own. The fact that medication for bipolar is not on the long term illness scheme yet epilepsy is… And it’s mostly the same drugs!.

With a very vulnerable daughter just turned 18 I better consider switching her up to private medical insurance from our public only insurance if this is the state of care I am expected to receive in the public hospitals (that I’m reading here)
