  2. For the non Russian speakers Novaya Zemlya translates simply into “New land”. Although Zemlya is also the Russian word for Earth, kind of how earth also means soil in English. But in Russian it’s closer to land than soil since Russian has another word for soil, pochva. Quite a bland name for a place. That is all Zemlyanini, that is you, Earthlings.
