Labour and Lib Dems’ new strategic relationship will strike fear in Tory hearts

  1. The headline is doing a lot of heavy lifting, but it certainly is funny how amenable to Lib Dems are to Labour since they no longer pose a threat to the economic status quo or the housing bubble (with the right-wing back in charge)

  2. Oh I hope so. Tories won their massive majority precisely because Farage made the Brexit party stand down in Tory seats in 2019.

  3. It’s a risky business having the Lib Dems stand aside. Depending on the seat, voters are just as likely to default to the Conservatives as they are to Labour.

It’s also worrying in a sense for the Labour left. Good relations with the Lib Dems are predicated on the Labour Party moving to the right, such that the Lib Dems have fewer reasons to object to Labour. Moving to the right in order to win isn’t how you achieve left wing policy. All it does in the long run is shift the entire political spectrum to the right.
