Police overwhelmed by digital forensics as 25,000 devices await checks

  1. It’s madness, I got accused of a crime, that involved them taking my computers and phones (no i’m not a nonce, and yes I wasn’t found guilty)

I literally worked in digital forensics at the time, including working with the arresting force in the past…

I’ve written in some other comments about the absolute fuck up that the police had when seizing material.

Not only did they only seize some random devices, they powered them down too. Literally losing a huge amount of possible data.

It took 18 months before they even came back to me and noticed they were encrypted….

    >It concluded that some forces are overwhelmed and do not have a clear understanding of what digital forensics are.

Absolutely, though I’ve watched stuff on Youtube of a company that tracks down stolen equipment, and the police just think that if you wear gloves you can climb all over stuff without destroying physical forensics. It’s like none of them have the slightest clue…

    >”Many forces didn’t have a sufficient level of understanding of the work involved to recover evidence from mobile phones. Delays, lack of resources and lack of adequate training means some victims are being let down and officers are missing their chance to bring offenders to justice.

Can confirm, they had me turn off my phones. I was like “huh…well you’re the boss!”

    “Oh dear, it’s encrypted!”

They didn’t even bother seizing most of my devices that could have contained any “evidence”

I still have disks and computes here now that I had back then…

  2. Problem here is quantity over quality…

Yes take the devices of accused child abusers

No don’t take the devices of people who write to their MP to complain about government policies

Yes take the devices of people making death and rape threats online

No don’t take the devices of people who might have possibly offended someone by writing something online

  3. Ive a video of someone egging my windows. Im sure the local cops know the persons. I said id would call at the local station and let the view it. Oh god no the would need to take my phone and send it away for inspection. So those numbers dont surprise me.

  4. Surely the police forces are just cloning the storage devices?

The legally can’t access the devices and have a look around. Cloning can take a lot of time but could easily be set up with the funding.

I guess that’s what happens when you don’t fund the police or pay peanuts for IT staff.

  5. Perhaps this outdated assortment of military drop outs, misogynists and racists hired to protect the private property of the wealthy are no longer beneficial to keep hanging around for most people.

The police no longer solve crimes, nor collect evidence. They are being asked to do work that they have neither the resources nor the expertise to perform.

  6. Their only effective actions are protecting the upper classes, corporate or upperclass owned property, quelling protests, and recently confiscating electric powered bicycles… they work for the rich and powerful not **you**
