Exclusive: Lithuania braces for China-led corporate boycott

  1. I was thinking, what does Lithuanian had to gain from this symbiotic boycott. There has to be something that is in the works

  2. Is there anything people, including non-Europeans, can do economically to support Lithuania if this happens?

    What goods can we buy/import?

  3. We should keep track of the “multinationals” that complied with China’s request and petition the relevant EU bodies to ban them out of European market.
I’m serious, r/europe can be a part of that. I’m counting on you, mods.

  4. The problem is, nobody on this sub wants to talk about the backstory to this situation because they aren’t really comfortable with the hard truth. Lithuania rolled out the red carpet for China on the understanding that China will[ invest heavily](https://sumin.lrv.lt/en/news/lithuania-and-china-seal-accord-to-set-up-a-joint-venture-providing-forwarding-and-logistics-services) in the country. This includes lots of infastructure investments like [building a deep sea port](https://customstoday.com/china-merchants-to-build-deep-sea-lithuania-port/) in Klaipeda.

However over time, the Chinese assessed the Lithuanian market, seeing it’s shrinking population and as well as a lot of Lithuanians migrating to other parts of Europe making the market far less attractable for investment. The Chinese started slowly backing away from wanting to invest and this was of great annoyance to Lithuania. They started to pivot towards a new strategy because Taiwan [literally pays countries](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-guatemala-portillo-idUSBREA2H1QD20140318) that recognises them. Lithuania is making a bet that if it can’t get any Chinese money, it will throw it’s card on Taiwan who will pay dividend through their special funding for countries that recognise them. It’s a win win for Lithuania because they get to be viewed globally (as we see on this sub) as a beacon of freedom and democracy against a giant like China whilst it benefits nicely from Taiwan funding it for that sacrifice when in reality, it’s not losing much as it’s trade with China is negligable at best.

  5. I don’t get the fuss. Surely Lithuania would have already banned its companies from doing business with China or indirectly with companies that supply China??
