Population growing at three times the rate of home supply

  1. We need a referendum to pause immigration and I’ll vote for any party who promises to take it because its the biggest issue for many I know and the reason our services never improve

  2. We should be delighted to have an influx of labour and talent, we desperately need it with our ageing population, housing shortages are temporary issues in comparison.

  3. Of course it is with unchecked mass immigration it’ll be worse than London in no time. I mean look at Kilarney alone, girls been harrased and no go areas in the town already

  4. clickbait article with no cop on behind it.

IF this article were correct it would the population growth of 360k would all live on their own.

most people live with at least 1 more person. Per the last census there was an average of 2.4 people per dwelling (not all dwellings are inhabited permanently -holiday homes etc)…so more reasonably 3 per household.

  5. Here is the original BPFI report:

“Resilient housing demand means price pressures will remain unless supply increases substantially”

Average rents have increased by 82% in Ireland compared to EU average of 18% between 2010 and Q2 2022

Housing commencement activity declining on an annual basis after peaking during the first quarter of 2022

Between 2011 and 2022, the population in Ireland increased by over half a million people whereas housing output grew by only 130,000 units

  6. There’s a difference between a homeless person and a rough sleeper. Felt this needs clarification based off the comments below.

Homeless = Cannot provide accommodation for themselves. In State provided accommodation,(hotels etc). approx. 10,000 people in Ireland./230,000 people in UK

Rough Sleepers = Homeless people who aren’t in state provided accommodation. Sleep on streets. Approx 150 people in Ireland/1,900 people in UK. Roughly 130 of that 150 are in Dublin City.

  7. The lack of infrastructure in Ireland will be it’s downfall, just look at the N11/M50 in the morning times…..more and more people are getting on the road every day so traffic jams will be just another normal thing in Ireland…..I’m talking about SERIOUS traffic jams.

People don’t realize just what type of shit show we are slowly walking into, with more and more people coming into Ireland it’s only a matter of time that citys will be well over populated and on the breaking point.

I for one welcome the apocalypse

  8. “Census figures show Ireland’s population grew by 360,000 between 2016 and 2022, yet only 120,000 homes were built in the same period.”

The three times is pretty misleading imo given that houses hold more than one person. You don’t need 360,000 houses to house 360,000 people.

There’s obviously a problem with lack of housing, this headline is misleading clickbait though imo

  9. A whole article about population growth and housing and not once does it mention immigration. The birth rate is 1.9 and already below replacement rate. The overwhelming amount of population growth in the past decade is through immigration. Let’s keep whistling past the graveyard and pretend that this has nothing to do with the shortage of housing.

  10. This needs a bit of context. Housing growth should not be a one to one with population growth. Houses accommodate multiple people.

  11. Dear Mr Varadkar and Mr Martin stop taking in boats of immigrants when we have no place to put ourselves, you absolute smooth brain reptiles.

  12. I was one of 5 kids and grew up in a 3 bed house in central Dublin, my mammie was one of 11 and lived in a 3 bed house in limerick, me auld fella was one of 8 and grew up in a 3 bed hole in Finglas. The point is, we have always been short of housing in this country and it’s irrelevant as to how many foreigners come here.

  13. Maybe we should put immigration on a hold while we are in a housing crisis, a bit of sense from our government would be great. Irish people can’t even live in Ireland anymore! It’s a joke.

  14. Yep, we’re fucked. This is the number 1 problem in this country and the government can’t seem to fix it.

  15. Also seen that in the last 6 months 1 million people born outside of Ireland have applied for Irish passport. People will be flocking over here from the UK.
