Good thing they didn’t spend over a decade closing police stations and decimating the number of usable cells.
Que Michelle mone selling them warehouse space for £30 million to be converted Intae cells
I knew the tories were criminals but I didn’t think it was this bad
Dont worry I’m sure they didnt cancel labour plans to build more early on in the tory years.
Totally not as if they did the same for every bit of infrastructure
So maybe we bring back the death penalty and make some room or maybe the Government pull their finger out and build more prisons.
That’s the options because clearly the reforming system in place isn’t working and the punishment isn’t deterring people from committing crimes.
Also maybe an idea that anyone who is not a citizen gets deported to free up space?
I wonder how many are in prison related to the failed war on drugs, and how much we spend incarcerating them
Being a criminal on the Uk must be great. Not enough police to catch you. If you do get caught there aren’t enough judges to sentence you. If you do get sentenced there aren’t enough cells to hold you and you’ll serve half your sentence maximum. How could the tories ever claim to be tough on crime.
Stop sentencing people for having a bit of weed on them. That would free up space!
This will be a staffing issue as opposed to an issue around lack of physical cells.
Lmao this government is fucking laughable; going from crisis to crisis. I truly hope they are destroyed at the next election to the point of no return
There was cross-party agreement in 2006 to build 18,000 new prison spaces.
Eighteen thousand.
Aside from an ill-considered venture with a prison-ship, there has been no activity since; no turf has been turned, nor even a site short-listed, nothing.
Justice in this Country has become a sham, lip-service to a notion, with police and judiciary manning cut to the bone, and ever-higher queues for Trial.
Never mind “they haven’t done this since 2008”, how many prisoners that SHOULD have been incarcerated, have been freed to strike again (if not repeatedly) since then, because the places are *needed* for “murderer and rapist” levels of offender?
Seriously, wtf goes *on* in the minds of politicians?!
A quick win would be to decriminalise drugs but hey what the hell do I know, it’s only worked really well in Portugal/America/others. Maybe more data is needed.
Probably dealing with an influx of political prisoners, what with the authoritarian turn British policing is taking.
This happened under the Tories at one point in the 1990’s when most police custody stations had at least one Home Office prisoner. One day they were all taken back to prisons and I understand there was severe overcrowding in prisons that day and night. The same afternoon Tory Home Secretary Michael Howard stood up in the House Of Commons and announced there were no Home Office prisoners being held in police stations.
The following day they were all back in the police cells.
What is the issue with tagging and home arrest/curfew?
I’m guessing it doesn’t work for some reason as it never gets mentioned anymore.
There’s a storyline on Emmerdale currently about a first-time offender worried about a custodial sentence because he made his partner take his speeding fine. Characters around him repeatedly mention prison.
It makes me laugh a lot. The prisons are all full.
Pretty sure Downing Street has gates at each end and security, why don’t we just put them with the rest of the criminals?
Is there anything that hasn’t been run into the ground on the Tories watch? Damn. This country is falling apart at the seams.
Always said we made a mistake in NI when we shut down The Maze after the Troubles, we could be renting those cells out to the UK Government for a bit of extra cash.
Lethal injection for murders, rapists and peados. Just freed us some prisons spaces for you Sunak
Oh no, guess they’ll have to release non-violent offenders in for minor crimes
Execute a few nonces and murderers, we save money and cells then.
At least the Tories can claim to be tough on crime, which is all their voters want to hear. Prisons are full to bursting, however Tory voters will scoff when you talk about prisoner welfare or people being locked up for minor drug offences that hurt no one. If anything, many think we are still too soft still, even when the current system does nothing to help re-offending rates. It is seriously time we start questioning our justice system and who it actually benefits, because it seems to only benefit those who run for-profit prisons right now.
You’d almost think that many prisons are run by private companies that have a strong incentive to maximise the number of inmates first and reduce crime as a mere potential consequence.
The shareholders of G4 and serco must be making record profits too. Just to let you know, Theresa Mays husband is a significant shareholder with G4 prison services.
Just another fundamental failing of the basic responsibility of government from the Tories.
Soon to be reported :
Outcry as Tory cronies fast tracked into private prison contracts bidding.
