I always thought it was strange how people who contribute absolutely shed loads of tax for their working life suddenly get the same dole as someone who has never worked in their life should they unfortunate enough to find themselves out of a job.
IMO this is a good scheme in general, although I haven’t looked into any of the fine print or details to see how it’ll work in practice.
This is quite honestly a brilliant idea.
This is a great idea.
Wasnt that the point of the split between Job Seekers Allowance and Job Seekers Benefit? There are already 2 tiers of dole that gave people with previous tax contributions more.
Is this just one of those civil servicey things where a bunch of people worked themselves into a circle?
Edit. Thank you to the kind people below for answering. Guess I misunderstood the difference between JSA/JSB
Good, and brings us more into line with other social democracies in Europe.
Should be a % of previous earnings like germany.
Losing a job shouldn’t immediately cause financial distress but it does with our current setup.
about fecking time. we should have a basic universal income though that helps everyone. being cynical i see them introducing this measure before the recession really kicks in because it will affect the better off, like their own kids & frends…
great, pension next
About time
Great idea!
I think it’s high time I told my.boss what I think of him….
> pay-related welfare system
Do they not see the irony? Isn’t this doubling down on creating a tiered society. Accommodating for gross inequality rather than reducing it.
Welfare obviously has to increase because of the greed driven inflation, this doubling will not effect most people who’s jobs are deemed essential. Claps for some, twice the money for accidental landlords that price themselves out of affordability.
So the government is aware that the current payment is un livable so why not increase it for disability payments aswell. asusaly the most vulnerable get forgotten about

Finally catching up with the rest of Europe.

Surely the people fired from higher-paid jobs are the ones who can afford to have savings and so don’t need the money as desperately as low-paid workers?
Not before time but the idea of paying someone not to work from cradle to grave is ghastly and the costs to society endless.
This is how Employment Insurance works in Canada. What you get depends on how much you made when working. I think you get 55% of your previous annual earnings, up to a cap of $600 or so a week. You also only have X number of weeks of it, depending on how long you worked for.
This is a step in thd right direction. In Canada the dole is something like $759/mo, but everyone working has employment insurance
It doesn’t count if you quit or get fired, but if your company goes bust or (like happened to me) you contract is ntlot renewed for lack of work etc, you get about 2/3rds of what you were on for 6-11 months.
I got it for 8 months, found work in about 2.5, but it meant not having to scramble for a, borderline min wage job or stress to bits about rent/bills/food/etc in the meantime. I went from about 55k/yr, to somewhere around 34k/yr if recall, and was able to really focus my job hunt so wound up getting something at just over 60k/yr after 10-ish weeks.
That 34k was taxed which was kind of funny, but onky a little bit of it and ig helps on your tax returns at the end of the year. Going in memory here, but I think I was coming out with about the equivalent of $2,350/mo. The gf was out of work for health reasons at the time and rent was $1,700mo so it really made the absolute world of difference – we’d have been fecked without ot.
You also had to show you were in the country and available for work Mon-Fri and actively seeking work on a regular basis too (every 2wks if I recall). Not 100% on this but I think weekdays spent outside Canada were deducted from what you were given, so no paid holidays!
Next move is to prevent people who’ve never worked from claiming the dole.

Obvious exceptions apply
Just as I was emigrating because I lost my job, fuck it 😂
Having in countries where this is the norm the downside to this is that people get stuck in a salary trap meaning that they avoid taking a meantime lower paid job to keep going until something better comes along so they end up being unemployed even longer.
This is like the first good idea Fine Gael have had in years.
I work in a Specified Purpose Contract roles. Currently on my third one for the same organisation. They vary from a couple of years to 5 years in length. Now while there is a severance package in place if you are not offered a new contract when your current one ends, it can be worrying thinking if it your employment ends abruptly and economic conditions are bad, that you might be in a bit of bother if it takes months to find a new job.
Sounds positive.
Hopefully over the years this welfare can increase while dole for the permanent scroungers and stay the same.
This would effectively be like a cut to the dole for the scroungers, thereby incentivising them to get a job.
The way it should be, why should I get the same as dole heads if I lose my job when I’ve contributed for so long and got nothing back
The irony is, this does **nothing** to support minimum wage workers who will come out at about 208 per week at the 50% cap rate and just a bit more at the 60% cap.
So, poor people remain poor and get *no* benefit for having worked.
Cool. *Cool.*
What about self employed?
They do this in France. When you get left off you get the rate for a few months and then it decreases after that.
Does this apply to people who get a healthy redundancy package too ?

I see nothing wrong with that.

Puts the Pay Related back in to PRSI.
