‘Everyone’s a part-time clinical microbiologist now, no-one can accept they just have a cold’

  1. > We don’t want to miss heart failure in a 77-year-old because we’re too busy with sniffling children

This seems like dangerous messaging when there’s a fatal variant of Strep A going around, on top of some severe flu’s.

  2. Yeah, well, as someone who is constantly trekking to the local Emergency Department because if you get sick after 5 pm/on the weekend tough luck no cardiology team hours, I can attest to the fact that you’ll be left sitting in the waiting room for 8 hours until your atrial fibrillation gets better of its own accord, then they’ll send you home with “ah you’re grand”. A 77 year old with heart failure could be missed regardless of the number of “sniffling children”.

  3. My kids school sent home a HSE letter this week to warn of the dangers of the current wave of winter viruses. It set when you contact a GP about your kid at a pretty low bar, in my opinion, but people have been told to follow the instructions for the last three years so what does this GP expect? He sounds like he’s out of practice dealing with the public.

  4. Wow what a useless article.

So fevers are fine except when they are not. Don’t bother the doctor because your child is probably fine, except when they might have a bacterial infection or potentially something serious when you should have brought them yesterday. The GP should be able to tell if it’s a bacterial infection by at least laying eyes on them and looking at the throat, skin, ear, and checking a urine sample, but equally they don’t want to waste time actually examining patients.

So the real problem is over zealous parents who should be made to feel like they are time wasters, not the chronic underfunding and lack of GPs.

Children can decompensate very quickly and a high fever in a child can be very scary especially for a new stressed out parent. The answer is to give more support, not tell them it’s probably grand.

  5. I’m fucking paying for the privilege out of my own pocket for my GP, so they will see me or my kids if I want to make an appointment.

  6. > after two locked-down winters.

Why are we repeating the lie that we were in lockdown in winter 2021-2022? I went to Ireland and then back to Scotland on exchange FFS.

Hard to take this shit seriously when pubs closing earlier for a bit is “lockdown”… spoilt shits. Like lockdown was fucking awful, but there sure as hell wasn’t a lockdown that winter.

This guy is a doctor, he should be more careful with his words.

  7. > After Covid, everyone is now a part-time clinical microbiologist, and absolutely no-one is happy with the idea they just have a common cold

There’s a very condescending tone to this statement. You don’t have to be a genius to understand the basics of the medical profession

  8. Of course we are. Every news channel & article over the past 2-3 years has been telling us about the different types of viruses around and how to tell between Corona & a normal cold….. except most people half listened in a panic (derived from the style of reporting) so we are all living in fear of catching really bad diseases. As soon as you get sick your first thought is you caught it.

  9. What a dreadful article. Can he or can’t he say with certainty if a kid has strep A. What is the risk that it’s missed, can a parent diagnose it?

He doesn’t address any of these questions, instead it’s just a bunch of smug ‘I know best’ bullshit.

  10. We had our first child during covid. Before, I hadn’t realised how prevalent “scare the shit out of parents” journalism is. The Indo is the worst for it. They spend the week driving people up the fucking walls and then print an article saying “people have become part time microbiologists”. It’s like paying to be gaslit.

  11. What a fucking cunt. A GPs sniffling child could be a first time mother’s baby choking on mucus. Fine, a mature analysis says nothing wrong….but fuck off you’re paid well enough to get on with it.

This just reads of “I’m sick of the public…they have stopped listening and following blindly whatever doctors don’t want to do and they should remember I know better.”

And of course he gets to pose for a picture.

  12. These are the same retarded “doctors” who said covid wasn’t serious and that masks didn’t work.
