Per capita egg consumption

  1. Source: https://www.fao.org/faostat/en/#data/FBS

The FAO data measures the egg consumption in kilograms. The map however, shows the egg consumption in number of eggs. I’ve calculated this by dividing the source data by 60 grams (the average weight of a medium sized chicken egg). The data includes all bird eggs. So not just chicken eggs but also duck, quail, ostrich and other bird eggs. The data also includes eggs that are used in other products. So it does include the eggs used in cakes, pasta etc.

I noticed that the wrong map of mine (with consumption in kg per capita) has been floating around the internet and I think it even got posted on this subreddit.

I was initially planning to show the numbers in kg per capita instead of eggs per capita. I changed my mind just before posting the map and converted everything to eggs per capita. However, I forgot to change the text in the legend. Fortunately I noticed this quite quickly and removed the map from the website and social media within 2 hours of posting it. Despite that, the wrong map has been floating around the internet and gained more traction in 2 hours than most of my maps do. This means that you might bump into a map that shows the same numbers, but where the legend says it’s in kg per capita. That map is wrong and the map posted above (in eggs per capita) is the correct one.

  2. How come Poland is so low in this ranking? Am I the only one who can eat eggs for breakfast 3 or 4 times a week? (if I could, I’d eat them 7 times a week)

  3. This is suspiciously low, like if you eat just 1 egg per day, it’s already 365 eggs per year. But who the hell eats just one egg? And it’s not just omelettes and fried/boiled eggs, there are a ton of recipes that include eggs.
