National Grid poised to start emergency winter plan as energy prices soar

  1. >The price of gas for next-day delivery rose to 260p, up from 153p when markets closed on Friday night. UK wholesale power prices neared £400 a megawatt hour, up from about £150 MWh last week. The daily auction on the N2EX, the trading market place for power, showed prices for tomorrow hit £1066 a MWh, data from energy data specialist EnAppSys showed.

    Absurd

  2. Stock up on candles and blankets for a harsh winter.

Wonder who *The party of Personal Responsibility* will blame this time?

  3. As a Gen X’er I was born in 74 when we had all the strikes and power cuts and no money to eat etc, really didn’t want to have to remember those times, but, since I’ve been through them, my best advice to anyone struggling is this.

Pick a room that has the most heat in it normally, fill it with as many blankets, pillows, clothing as you can.

Even take in the mattress from your bed, make it the main room you live in as weather gets colder.

When you are in the room, put towels down at bottom of the door, it will stop the cold air coming in.

Invest in a super cheap 400w halogen heater, instant heat to help warm the room very quickly then switch it off again to save costs.

If you got kids, obviously it going to be super hard, have to try get them to either share rooms as much as possible or for them to remember to do same as yourself to keep their rooms warm, also, since most live on their phones these days, invest in a super cheap android phone, several power banks, and the best data deal sim card you can find, then put that sim in the phone and tether from it, so you can all use the internet at the same time while power is out etc.

Smarty currently doing a no contract 120gb per month offer for £12pm.

Bit of techie info, almost all power banks give you a number value like 5000mah 10000mah 20000 mah etc.

That is for the batteries inside it running at 3.8volts, when you are charging your phone it takes 5 volts, so the actual capacity becomes lower, so a powerbank at 10000mah can actually be as low as 6667mah when actually charging your devices, Around 60% in many of them.

So, to work it out easily, if say your phone has a 3500mah battery, and normally you need to charge it say twice a day, do the following.

    3500 divided by 0.6 = 5833 for 1 full charge

if you need to charge twice per day, then it is 5833 times 2 = 11666.

So you would need a power bank or combination of power banks to total at least 11,666mah to make sure the phone doesn’t go dead on you if you have no electric due to power outages.

Some makes of power banks will give 2 values, actual value of say 10,000mah then rated value which is much lower, that is what it really is when running at 5 volts for charging other devices.

Be safe this winter and look out for each other, we are all each other have got at moment.

EDIT: Thought this would be self explanatory but, use halogen heater while power is on to warm room as much as possible as quickly as possible before power goes off.

  4. >**28/11/2022 DFS Requirement not issued**

    >Further to issuing the anticipated requirement notice. There is no longer considered to be a requirement for DFS.

  5. “National Grid indicated on Monday morning it could issue the requirement for consumers to start using its new demand flexibility service, which rewards businesses and households that shift their power usage away from times of peak demand.”

You peasants go without heating and pop a sweater on and we’ll throw you a handful of coins. Meanwhile the millionairs and billionaires can keep heating their swimming pool.

  6. The title of the article is the exact opposite: “National Grid cancels plans to start emergency winter scheme”

  7. Funny if everyone is turning their heating off and saving on energy and lights surely there would be more in the grid
Or is somebody lying to us .

  8. Can someone explain something to me?

From what I’ve seen recently, gas prices are essentially back to normal from the stupidly high peak, yet energy prices are still really high?

I’m honestly not understanding, I assume energy relies on more than just gas, but that was the thing that sent prices silly in the first place, and oil doesn’t seem to be at a particularly high cost either atm.

I don’t get it, did Ofgem just go “So, is energy still really expensive?”,

    “yeah, lol”,

“okay, we’ll take your word for it, price cap goes up”

  9. It’s going to be a real dent to my ego if going on-prem now results in us having to shut down servers because the UK Legit ran out of power.

The very thing I’ve got in my ISO manual as a very unlikely event might actually happen.

sigh. I really don’t want to have to relocate us out of the country, but events like this is going to KILL the tech sector.

  10. Even if they are now longer going through with it, I’d rather they have a plan or plans in place than allow us to stumble into this blindly. Should we need to do this, it needs to be communicated properly and enacted without major delays, with our response to COVID showing the consequences of failing to prepare for something you know is likely to happen. I hope it is never needed but I am glad the National Grid is at least taking the idea seriously.

  11. Yeah ive been prepping for this and learning how to keep my house warm when this happens. Portable camping stove for cooking and heating. Planning on getting a little camping heater too as well so i can turn at least one room into a relative hotspot.

Been looking into terracotta heaters as a source of heat too. Also stocking up on candles for when the power goes out and portable battery packs

  12. It’s really about time the UK took back ownership of the North Sea oil and gas and ran them in partnership with BP and/or Shell. Sell that on the open market and use the proceeds to fund both the next generation of nuclear power and renewables.

  13. Yup blankets and candles and get a method to boil water that doesn’t require electricity. Theres bound to be panic buying shortly.
