How Belgians commute to work (2017)

  1. Interesting how much trains are used in hainaut and brabant walloon. Also, does the cycling map show where land is flat or is it an investment difference?

  2. This might be a lot different now, seeing with the whole covid thing more people might stay aways from public transportation now. I’ve also noticed an increase in people going to work via bike. Including myself. I’d be interested to see a map from this year

  3. Interesting but 2017 is too long ago to still be relevant – too many changes with COVID and energy prices etc. that I imagine have had an impact.

Besides, the intervals used are completely ridiculous. First map has 90-100% as darkest colour, then some have 4-100% and a different one has 20-100%? Very odd choices at best and misleading at worst.

  4. The train is often for a commute to Brussels. Brussels has rather good accessibility by train, certainly compared to other Belgian cities. The alternatives (car, bicycle) are also a bit problematic in BXL.

  5. Can’t get to work with a bike if you don’t have to get to work because you are in the hospital because some car driving 90km/h on a small road that’s in bad condition, full of twists and hard to see what is coming could not stop in time.

Source: I have family in Wallonia, I’m glad I get their alive with all those roads as described above.

  6. I feel like grouping motorcycles & cars & carpool together kinda makes it useless? 2 of those are a way more efficient use of the road than the other one.

  7. Interesting, the region that is dark for NMBS actually has quite a crappy connection….

Geraardsbergen is not great, Ninove even more terrible, Brakel, what’s is a train? Zottegem is quite good yes.

  8. Interesting ! We can clearly see how bad Wallonia is when it comes to cycling. Because there is no infrastructure, and nothing is planned.

  9. More car and less trains in Limburg makes sense. Public transport isn’t as great outside of the Flemish diamond and distances longer.

Plus if you have to lose 2h going to Brussels anyway, might as well do it in private because that’s a long time to have to share on public transport everyday.
