Three children die in icy lake tragedy

  1. Ah man I was hoping they’d pull through, this is some horrible news to start the week. Those poor children and those poor families.

We were all children once and I bet we all made decisions we wouldn’t do now as adults, as we have more understanding of the world. Some of the comments online about this situation are so callous.

  2. >Three boys aged eight, 11 and 12 have died

Looking at those ages, I seriously hope some poor family hasn’t lost multiple kids. Absolutely horrible.

  3. Absolutely tragic – it’s one of those situations that words can’t describe.

In slightly slower time questions need to be asked about how this happened – some news reports suggesting 6 kids fell in which is unbelievably tragic. But for now you can only hope the 4th child pulls through and that the other two are also safe and sound.

  4. Horrible at any time but two weeks before Christmas FFS. Presents probably sat at home waiting for them. Can’t possibly imagine what their parents must be going through

  5. Before you blame the parents – it’s ok for kids to be out playing.

This was a circumstance that is rare and not in the typical ‘parenting handbook’ of stuff you warn your kids about.

This sounds like a classic case of ‘death by misadventure’

  6. Horrible but not unexpected. They advised they were carrying out resuscitation at the scene.

I was a very risk averse child, old before my time, but then I was born in the 70’s and we were absolutely bombarded with pretty horrific public safety films were kids died in their hundreds. Kids will be pushing boundaries and finding their limits, it’s part of growing up. Unfortunately for these children they didn’t recognize the risk and paid dearly.

  7. Whatever you may say about the parents in this area (Trust me, as a local, there are some really shitty scumbag families around here) Kids don’t listen when told not to play on the ice.

My parents told me not to play on the frozen canal. I still did it and that was 30+ years ago. Kids do stupid things.

    Tragic accidental loss of life.

  8. So tragic. I am confused that many hours on from the initial incident emergency services still seem unclear about how many people actually entered the water. Either 1 or 2 additional people have been reported missing or they haven’t?
Articles have been worded as if the rescuers _don’t know_ rather than _won’t say_. Confusing. I hope, obviously, that it was just the four boys.
    Awful for their families.

  9. I grew up near a river and it froze over a couple of times. I played on it every time. Stupid yes, but I was a similar age to these kids. As a Dad it breaks my heart, poor little dudes.

  10. I go scuba diving in water a few degrees warmer than this, with a drysuit, diving thermals and wetsuit gloves and hood, it still takes your breath away as you hit the water and after a couple of mins it feels like there’s just no blood in any exposed skin. I hate to think what it’s like with no suitable protective equipment at all.

Feel for the families of these kids.

  11. Obviously thoughts go out to the familys, but my thoughts are also with all the emergency service workers and hospital staff who won’t move on from this very easily either.

  12. It’s obviously never good when this happens but it is even worse so close to Christmas. That many empty chairs is just going to be unbearable.

  13. So tragic, hope the 6 year old makes it, and before you blame the parents, most people have rebelled and knowingly done dangerous stuff despite being warned against it, sometimes that is part of the thrill of it

  14. This is awful. Everyone as kids done stuff that our parents told us not to do. I’d say most of us have done dangerous stuff as kids without realising. Those poor families.

  15. How does this happen? Where they far out in the middle of the lake? Where they unable to reach them? I live in the Alps and people fall in frozen water from time to time and much go to hospital, but people dying is so rare.

  16. I see the world’s perfect parents, who have never made any sort of mistake whatsoever, are out in force on this post.

I really will never understand you people or what the hell it is you get from rushing to make your judgey posts: are you hoping people will line up to applaud your wondrousness?

  17. Yesterday I was walking by a lake that was frozen over and my first instinct was to see if I can walk on ice and if it would hold me. I stopped because it started to crack as soon as I set my food on it, but I completely understand a child’s fascination with this. My dad fell through ice playing hockey and some 15 years later I did it too.

Accidents happen, it’s a terrible tragedy.

  18. “One police officer tried to punch through the ice as he and other rescue workers attempted to reach the children”.

How awful, I hope they get the care they need too as no doubt this will play on their minds. Just horrible.

  19. I remember when I was about 11 years old I lived near Inverness and me and my friend thought it was a good idea to start walking on the ice of a frozen pond. We both fell through and it was definitely deep. We got ourselves out and we were fine after changing clothes and warming up but our parents were all so pissed off with us and I see why now. I think we got lucky there.

  20. Mother to an 8 year old and my heart is breaking for these families. This is so beyond tragic. Those poor boys must have been so scared. God bless them and the emergency workers who tried to rescue them.

  21. I feel terrible for the police officers as well. They’ve just had to spend the night in the freezing cold frantically searching for 3 dead children with nothing but a torch.

Doing what we never could. Thank you.

  22. > A police officer tried to punch through the ice as he and others attempted to rescue the children in Babbs Mill Park, Kingshurst, on Sunday.

What a hero. Please look after this officer, make sure he’s ok. Must be absolutely devastated.

  23. This just hurts my heart, I lost my 22 year old son in an accident in May of this year and it was and still is devastating. I got to see my boy grow into an adult which I’m so thankful for even though we still lost him far too soon. I cannot imagine what these parents are going through and so close to Christmas urgh life can be so incredibly cruel sometimes. And for the people blaming the parents 🖕🏻 sat on your fucking high horse, kids are known to do all sorts of shit because that’s what kids do. I look back to when I was a kid and it’s only pure luck that I didn’t fucking die doing some of the stupid shit we all used to get up to when out playing.

  24. Very sad. Children see picture-postcard scenes of people playing on ice in countries where it’s really cold, and don’t understand that here in the UK it rarely gets cold enough for lake ice to be thick/safe enough to skate or play on. Best to always assume that lake or river ice is simply no go here.

  25. After reading about this I quizzed both my kids, oldest won’t go on ice but the youngest said he would. I’m glad I educated him on this because I couldn’t imagine the pain they are going through right now
