Edit: Thank you all for your replies. I think we’ve confirmed it as 17 May, 1969. Incredible that I managed to find this out from you all. Thank you.

Hello from Scotland 🙂

I’ve been collecting and archiving old 35mm slides (most destined for the bin) for a while now, cleaning them up and scanning them.

I came across this photo, no dates but I think it looks like the 70s. I’d love to know what the event is and where it is. Anyone know?

  1. Looks like it’s from a May 17 celebration in front of the Royal Castle in Oslo. You can clearly see Karl Johan (the street) in the background.

  2. Constitution day like people already said. I see men in hats, and that went out of style in the 60’s, right? Then again, it’s a color photo. Three of the buses look 50-60’s to my eyes, but the red one looks newer. I’d say this is probably 1st half of the 70’s.

  3. Old school russebusser?

Its definitely 17.th of may, taken from the Royal Castle down towards the Parlament.

Year is unclear, but before 1980 and after 1960 I would guess.

  4. The car on the right looks like a Volvo 144, which means it’s 1967 or later.

The buses have pre-1971 number plates. They could of course retain these plates after 1971, but if ownership changed they would get reregistered with new two letter, five digit plates. This implies that the picture is taken no later than the early seventies. So 1967 to maybe 1973 or 74.

And, as others have pointed out, it’s 17. mai in Oslo.

  5. Try posting it to “Gamle bilder fra Oslo” on Facebook. The amount of details some people there manage to notice is baffling.
