  1. Farewell, and good luck for whatever comes after this job. End of an era as they say really (it was her long coming decision to step down, as i understand)

  2. That’s a beautiful thing to do, really touching. I’m not so sure she did that much for the EU, and sure stonewalled a lot of Macron’s ideas, so idk how their interpersonal relationship really was.

But France sure went the extra mile here.

  3. I’m so grateful to have been taught Deutsch and Français in school so I can understand everything and still speak Dutch and English.

  4. Goodness me, who’s cutting onions.I wasn’t sure for none-French and none-German speakers there were translations so I just translated the best I could Macron’s part, knowing a bit of French, hope it makes sense :

“Our country, you know it well. France got to know you and be fond of you. You dedicated your time to keeping Europe united despite all challenges. I wanted to thank you, for teaching me so much and to have accepted this young rash president, who wanted to shake many things. I think we shook many things together, and we have done many things for Europe in the last few years. It’s in this skill of finding a balance between our two countries, with their differences in character and history, that we have convinced others to set aside differences and build together.

Nothing was pre-written of this young educated girl in East Germany, in a country fractured by history, becoming the chancellor of a unified country helping push Europe forward. And to thank you to have never forgotten its history and done so much for it.”

  5. Behind the scenes I’m sure Macron had many issues with Merkel. He and her are completely at odds as to how the EU should move forward. He is a ‘let’s do it’ whereas she is a ‘do nothing.’

  6. Smiling Merkel is my new favorite thing. I think Mutti was great for europe as in peace, prosperity and stability. Can’t imagine the shitshow of whole post 2008 to 2010ish with unstable leader.

  7. Very classy tribute!

I am expecting a similar one to be dedicated to President Nicos Anastasiades 😉

Malta probably wants the same, go ask them

  8. 1000 years of being enemies…

1000 years of being friends are ahead of us.

    Vive l’amité franco-allemande!

    Es lebe die deutsch-französische Freundschaft

  9. awwwwww they are so cute! the smiles and giggles seem genuine.

i think they didn’t go well together on a political level… but from human to human they seem to have liked each other. 1:38 min. that looks like it’s coming from the heart.
