Hey guys, just moved to Iceland, Akureyri from Canada. I’m really curious how adopting pets cats/dogs work here? I can’t seem to find any shelters here especially for dogs. What would you guys recommend me to do lmao. I’m really looking forward into adopting.

  1. Kisukot is the cat shelter in Akureyri. And with dogs… there is no shelter. There is no wild dogs in Iceland, maybe lost dogs.

  2. Halló fellow Canadian, glad to see more crazy Canucks in Akureyri! If you love cats but aren’t able to adopt you can always say hello to friendly kitties such as Ágústa (hope I got the name right) the hard working cat down at Icewear, that’s how I get my cat fix in from time to time lol.

  3. Heya, I’m also (French) Canadian living in Akureyri and I adopted my kitties at Kisukot. The owner is doing a very good job at rescuing the cats and you will most definitely have a lot of choice. You can find them on Facebook easily.

  4. Hi there, welcome to Akureyri. 🙂

Kisukot in Akureyri functions as a cat rescue shelter, availability of adopting cats depends on if the owner allows it or if you live in a condo apartment it depends on what the apartment board as decided or if everyone living nearby are okay with it. It’s of course a lot less of an issue if you just keep them indoors.

  5. There actually is no shelter for dogs but Dýrahjálp works with a network of fosterhomes for dogs in need. The dogs that end up in fosterhomes usually get adopted within a few weeks of being there. It’s a very nice system, much better for their mental health than shelters ☺️
