Brentwood council ‘bans’ Deliveroo drivers from High Street

  1. >Deliveroo drivers have been “banned” from parking on a High Street in a council scheme that could be rolled out in other areas.

    Just their parking, not the service

  2. There’s a guy near me who delivers on one of those chopper type bikes with massive tyres. That thing is not like bike, it’s more like a small motorcycle in size and if it hits you, you’ll be properly fucked. Not that he keeps to roads either.

  3. It’s not just Deliveroo but Just Eat and all the others. Also just because it’s an electric bike doesn’t mean you can use the pavement and ride without lights at night. They are a bit of a menace.

  4. Good.

    I live on one of the major roads into my local city centre.

    At one point, where the road narrows after a box junction and before a bus stop, the route passes a run of four or five takeaways.

    There’s clear double yellow lines there, and yet every single day a whole lane is blocked by Deliveroo drivers parked up to collect orders. Parked on the kerb, on double yellow lines, within a box junction, and blocking a bus stop.

    Cannot tell you the amount of times I’ve witnessed the utter chaos of near misses, scrapes, accidents, and busses having to divine passengers on and off in the middle of the road because these Deliveroo drivers steadfastly refuse to park in THE FREE PARKING SPACES ACROSS THE ROAD THAT ARE ALWAYS EMPTY.

    They will literally create a complete omnishambles because they can’t be bothered to cross the road.

    And it’s not like they’re in so much of a hurry they can’t afford the time to not fuck up everyone else’s journey. Every time I pass they’re parked up in a junction, traffic piling up and squeezing around them, and they’re sitting in the takeaway having a casual chat with the owner.

    They also generally get remarkably aggressive and vengeful at the drop of a hat. Around three or four times now I’ve had a Deliveroo driver jump out their car and start shouting and swearing at me because they’re trying to park basically inside my local Co-Op’s front door (despite it having a massive, free car park) and I had the termacity to be a pedestrian in their way.

    And their rebuttal to being called out is always ‘It’s my job, mate! I’m allowed to park where I want to do my job!’ which is like me as a retail worker saying ‘It’s my job, mate! I can rip open the cereal box, hold your mouth open and pour the contents in if I want! Getting food into you is doing my job!’

    Being able to call upon a 24/7 treaty-treat delivery service has truly fried people’s brains, and if I were in charge I’d very seriously consider banning it.

  5. Yep get them all banned. Covid was two years ago yet you can’t get decent service in any McDonalds despite them all being empty because you have to wait behind a que of deliveroo drivers.

  6. It’s a misleading headline by the BBC. It’s a ban on parking but they get 15 minute permits. Some drivers treat the path as their own and some just don’t give a fuck. Hell, some think they can just park wherever they can. If it was a complete ban, i think there would be a lot of backlash from most business that use them and Deliveroo would likely kick up a massive storm.

  7. There’s double yellows on the side street off an arterial road near my mum’s where there’s about 10 delivery scooters parked at all times.

    There’s a KFC just there and I guess the delivery app shows this as a hot spot for jobs.

    The scooter riders also ride through a cycle path on the sides of a road barrier without a care in the world.

    I’ve seen one or two delivery scooter ride across a small park to get to their customer quicker.

    Council won’t do anything about it coz resources or something.

    The whole cheap and quick food industry and demand for it is what is behind this, but hey, progress!

  8. * Riding the wrong way down one-ways

    * Riding on the wrong side of the road

    * Riding over the speed limit

    * Riding on the pavement

    * Riding without lights

    * Not obeying traffic lights

    * Blocking the pavement

    * Having a small noisy petrol engine instead of electric motor on your bike

    * Combination of the above

    Not surprised, wish they would do it here.

    It’s a good idea but so many of the riders, probably the majority(at least here) – are taking the piss

    They need to have a law stating lights must be used in the dark or bike will be confiscated

  9. Never used deliveroo just eat or any other food delivery service apart from my local Chinese who do Thier own deliveries.Why are people so lazy that they can’t get Thier own takeaways. What pisses me off the most is walking into a takeaway and having to wait 30mins to get served whilst drivers come and go in seconds

  10. A large number of their drivers are pretty cavalier when it comes to weaving through heavy traffic. I get that they want to make as much money as possible but I have seen several near misses that make you wonder if saving that extra second or two was really worth the risk.

  11. Brentwood sucks for anything pedestrian related which makes this suprising to hear. They’d never do stuff that negatively impacts actual cars at all though, even a new zebra crossing would be very unlikely. Even some main pedestrian routes from the station just straight up have no lights, completely pitch black paths despite being the main routes used.

    Cars should just be banned from Brentwood high street like they have in neighbouring towns, would never happen though, just put a filter in the middle and make it pedestrian priority so buses can still use it.
