Very funny, somewhat cruel, a heart in there somewhere.
Pioneer of humour quiet recognisable online.
You would enjoy at a party but you probably wouldn’t want to be blamed for inviting them.
His shows in radio 1 in the early 90’s were legendary. Who could forget the German staying in London asking the number for ambulance, only to be told no, no, no. Or his wind up calls to Harrods or the White House. Who could forget Clint Rimmer on Vatican Radio. Tape wind!! RIP
This is actually very sad.
Love him or hate him he held a light up to pomp and hypocrisy and his work documenting Peter Cook’s archives was great.
I remember him phoning a slightly-tipsy Mary Whitehouse who refused to play until he offered her a prize. Genuinely amusing.
Edit: His final project “Hitler’s Jazz Band” is on Sky Arts on 14th December at 2100.
Ahead of his time. Unfortunately he is likely to be overshadowed by the people who came later and copied his approach. His old Evening Standard TV review columns are well worth a read if you can find them.
* recall his late night C4 show was really funny and upset the Tories
