Is Pierogy originated in Poland or Ukraine

  1. While the origin of the pierogi is often under debate, the exact origin of the dish is unknown and unverifiable. Dumplings most likely originated in China and became widespread in Europe during the Middle Ages or later periods.[1] Some claim that pierogi were spread by Marco Polo’s expeditions through the Silk Road, thus suggesting a connection to Chinese mantou.[12] Other sources theorize that in the 13th century, pierogi were brought by Saint Hyacinth of Poland from the Far East (Asia) via what was then the Kievan Rus’.[13] These became characteristic to Central and East European cuisines, where different varieties (preparation methods, ingredients, fillings) were invented.

  2. places where pierogi or similar dish are common and greatest extent of mongol empire share suspiciously large % of territory

  3. Pierogi is the Polish word so I’ll go with Polish. Ukrainians have a different word for them.

  4. If my poor Nan saw “pumpkin spice mini pierogies” she would immediately die again.

  5. Are potato pancakes originated in Switzerland or Belarus?

  6. As far as I know, dumplings stuffed with meat, cheese or vegetables are the “local specialty” of most of Eurasia, and probably originate from China.

Pierogi are a Slavic version of this dish, mostly associated with Poland, although nearly identical dishes are also known in Ukraine and Slovakia.

Pumpkin spice pierogi are probably an American invention, but you can put just about anything edible inside pierogi, so why not?

  7. Its the same with sałatka jarzynowa. The Russians call it “olivye” or “olivier” salad, but it’s pretty common throughout Europe with variations (not just Slavic countries).

Same with stuffed cabbage. Gołąbki, golubtsi, sarma, etc. Different countries have a different name/variation for a very similar dish.

  8. Nationality is a difficult subject in this general area over larg periods of time. To illustrate – our greatest poet, Adam Mickiewicz, is regarded as a national poet in Poland, Lithuania and Belarus. He wrote in Polish “Lithuania my homeland”. I don’t think there are definite answers to be had about such distinctions.

  9. Thanks for an inspiration for a late dinner. I’m going to Żabka for some ruskie pierogi 🥟🥟🥟

  10. Three things trigger me about this post:

    3. Pumpkin spice flavour? WTF?
